Prime Video is all set to release its new thriller drama series The Girlfriend, which stars Olivia Cooke as the titular girlfriend. All six episodes of the show will be released on the platform on September 10 at midnight Pacific Time.
Based on Michelle Frances’ novel, the show follows the story of a woman named Laura, whose seemingly perfect life is turned upside down when her son Daniel introduces her to his girlfriend, Cherry, who is a real estate agent trying to make it big.
Laura suspects that Cherry is not who she appears to be, but is she right about Cherry, or is it just her paranoia? Fans have to wait for the show to drop to find out.

Olivia Cooke Found Portraying Her Role in The Girlfriend “cathartic”

The Girlfriend explores Britain’s class divide through the clash between Laura, a polished and successful woman, and Cherry, her working-class counterpart, two women bound by their determination to hold on to Danny, though their motives may not be as different as they seem.
Cooke addressed the same in an interview with Who What Wear. She explained that, being from the working-class of Manchester herself, she resonated with Cherry’s character in the show. She said:
“It was super cathartic. All these sort of microaggressions you feel as someone [who] might be working-class—you often have to just bottle and swallow.”
She continued to explain:
“For me, feeling that slight deficit, and also being a woman in an industry that’s frankly easier to navigate when you went to Eton or another public school… it was freeing to play someone like Cherry who wears her emotions on the surface and isn’t afraid to scream out her frustrations. Because of that, I got to address my own frustrations in a safe environment.”
Cooke began her career with small roles in TV before getting her first break in the thriller TV show, Bates Motel, for her heartfelt portrayal of Emma Decody. Now, she is widely known for appearing as Alicent Hightower in HBO’s Game of Thrones spin-off series House of the Dragon. She also opened up about the upcoming season recently.
