The fate of Jin Sakai after the climactic events of Ghost of Tsushima has been one of the biggest mysteries for fans since the game ended. Five years later, Ghost of Yotei finally sheds some light on what happens to Jin after defeating the Mongol ruler, Khotun Khan, and deciding his uncle’s fate as a rightful Samurai.
Jin’s mystery is revealed through a side quest called ‘The Storm Quest’ where Atsu, Yotei‘s protagonist, finds his belongings. What follows is a brief cutscene explaining the life that the Ghost of Tsushima chose for himself.
The Storm Blade Side Quest Reveals Jin’s Fate After Ghost of Tsushima
The Storm Blade quest begins after interacting with a storyteller called Ugetsu in the Forgotten Shrine. From there, the storyteller hints about the existence of a powerful katana sword called the Storm Blade. Although the real lore behind this weapon is lost to the past, Ugetsu claims that he will be able to reveal the story if he sees the weapon. Thus, it sends us on a quest to retrieve this weapon.
On this journey to recover the sword, Atsu will get various references and easter eggs from Ghost of Tsushima. For example, a fox will show up and help Atsu find the sword that is later stolen by the Nine-Tails gang. While recovering the sword from these thieves, you will find various shrines telling the tales of Tsushima. You can even find Jin Sakai’s Stag Helmet, dagger, saddle, and other familiar trinkets.
Once the quest is over and you get the Storm Blade back from the Nine Tails, Ugetsu shows up to tell the story of its legendary master, Jin Sakai. According to him, Jin had to flee from his homeland as he had become an outlaw for his own people. That’s because he broke the Samurai code by becoming the Ghost of Tsushima. Now that he had nowhere to go, he came to Ezo, Ghost of Yotei‘s homeland, and lived in seclusion.
Interestingly, it is also revealed that Jin Sakai became the very first Shinobi, as he cast aside the way of the Samurai.
How Ghost of Yotei Picks Up the Story After Tsushima
The Ghost of Yotei didn’t directly pick up Jin Sakai’s story after Ghost of Tsushima. Instead of giving us a direct explanation through linear storytelling, the game weaves its legacy into the world through lore, artifacts, and myths. All of these pieces, when brought together, explain the entire journey of Jin after leaving his homeland.
Finding out Jin’s belongings, like the Storm Blade and Stag Helmet, aren’t just mere rewards for Atsu. They give the new generation of warriors a chance to carry out his legacy and walk on the path he paved. Ghost of Yotei tells just enough to bridge the gap and enlighten us on Jin’s later life.
Long story short, Jin disappeared into the history books, leaving behind his weapons so they can find a rightful master going forward. His legacy will forever be wretched in Sucker Punch’s Ghost series.
