Timothée Chalamet‘s sports comedy-drama, Mary Supreme, is all set to hit the theaters under the banner of A24. This film, helmed by Josh Safdie of Uncut Gems fame, has the biggest budget for an A24 film at $70 million. It surpassed the budget of last year’s Civil War. Safdie co-wrote the film alongside Ronald Bronstein.
Chalamet is also a co-producer of the film. He is joined by Safdie, Bronstein, Eli Bush, and Anthony Katagas as producers. Chalamet will be eyeing his next Oscar nomination after A Complete Unknown with this film. The actor played table tennis player Marty Mauser in the film, who goes to great lengths in pursuit of greatness.
Marty Supreme Release Date: When Does the Movie Hit the Theaters After NY Premiere
Marty Supreme had its world premiere at the 2025 New York Film Festival on October 6, 2025. It was a “secret screening” during the Main Slate of the festival (via Variety). The film will be released in theaters in the United States by A24 on Christmas Day, i.e., December 25, 2025. Nordisk Film will distribute the movie in Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden.
The film’s premiere received acclaim, with critics praising the performance of Chalamet. Variety’s co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh wrote on X about the movie, “‘Marty Supreme’ is ‘Uncut Gems’ meets ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ meets ‘Jerry Maguire,’ carried by Timothée Chalamet’s best performance yet.”
Another praise for Chalamet’s performance came from DiscussingFilm’s Diego Andaluz, who shared that he gave “the performance of a lifetime in this unforgettable, awe-inspiring cinematic tour-de-force.”
MARTY SUPREME is Safdie’s best film yet. A kinetic odyssey that plays like a deranged cross between CATCH ME IF YOU CAN & UNCUT GEMS. THR writer David Canfield wrote on X, “Timothée Chalamet’s career-best performance—he was born to play this guy.” It will be Timothée Chalamet’s second Christmas Day release in a row, after last year’s A Complete Unknown. The first trailer of the film dropped back in August, in which Timothée Chalamet donned a retro look as the titular character.
Marty Supreme Cast: Who Are Joining Timothée Chalamet in This Movie
After the film’s premiere, many critics are convinced that Timothée Chalamet would give Leonardo DiCaprio and Dwayne Johnson a tough competition during next year’s Oscar campaign. Chalamet, who had earlier played Lisan al-Ghaib, a legendary musician, Willy Wonka, and King Henry V, was rigorously committed to playing this ping-pong player.
He started taking lessons in the sport back in 2018. During COVID, he practiced in the living room of his Tribeca home. He kept his training going despite getting busy on films like Wonka, Dune, and The French Dispatch. Chalamet addressed his intensive, years-long prep for Marty Supreme and A Complete Unknown with THR. He shared:
If anyone thinks this is cap, as the kids say — if anyone thinks this is made up — this is all documented, and it’ll be put out. These were the two spoiled projects where I got years to work on them. This is the truth. I was working on both these things concurrently.
Safdie sought the help of Diego Schaaf to help Chalamet with the ping-pong lessons. He was also coached by former American Olympian Wei Wang. Kevin O’Leary, aka Mr. Wonderful, plays the businessman Milton Rockwell in the film, who serves as the movie’s antagonist (kind of). It is his first film role, where he plays someone other than himself.
Playing the role of Rockwell’s wife, Kay Stone, is Gwyneth Paltrow. She is coming back to the screen after a long five-year gap, and she shares some pretty intimate scenes with Chalamet. Stone, an old Hollywood star, gets into an affair with Marty in the film. Paltrow opened up about her role in the movie with Vanity Fair:
I mean, we have a lot of s*x in this movie. There’s a lot—a lot… They meet and she’s had a pretty tough life, and I think he breathes life back into her, but it’s kind of transactional for them both.
Fran Drescher plays Marty’s difficult mother in the film. Tyler, the Creator, in his debut role, plays his partner Wally, and Odessa A’zion plays Wally’s girlfriend Rachel. Other actors in the film include Abel Ferrara, Penn Jillette, Sandra Bernhard, Spenser Granese, Philippe Petit, Luke Manley, John Catsimatidis, Tracy McGrady, Isaac Mizrahi, and Naomi Fry.
Marty Supreme Plot: Is It a Biopic on Marty Reisman
Marty Supreme follows Timothée Chalamet’s Marty Mauser, a young man chasing a dream that no one takes seriously. The film is set against the backdrop of 1950s ping-pong. The story of Marty Supreme first came to Josh Safdie through his wife (and executive producer of the film), Sara Rossein.
She read The Money Player, a memoir written by ping-pong player Marty Reisman, and figured that her husband would love this story. Safdie showed Reisman’s picture on the cover to Chalamet and told him, “I want to do a movie in this world. Check out what this player looks like” (via THR).
While Safdie’s film began from Reisman’s book, he instead made his movie’s story about the fictional Marty Mauser. Mauser is a loosely inspired version of Reisman’s character. Safdie shared that he added some of Reisman’s biographical details into his movie as a “homage” to the icon.
In the movie, Mauser sells shoes on the side while pursuing his goal of defeating his greatest rival, Koto Endo. Safdie shared about the scale of the film:
Luckily, I was overwhelmed in a great way with the incredible world-building of this project. There’s this epic undertaking, spanning over 150 characters and speaking parts and tons of locations and having to shoot incredibly long hours. I really didn’t have much time to reflect about anything but which five or 10 extras I wanted to be in the corner of the frame — and how to convince them to be real people.
He further shared that he wanted to make the film as large as he could possibly make it. Chalamet shared that he resonated with the central character’s struggles in his pursuit of greatness. He shared, “In a sense, the story of Marty Mauser is really comparative. And so I was deeply moved by it.”
