After an endless stream of letters from Conrad (Christopher Briney), Belly (Lola Tung) finally replies to him in The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 episode 10. The second last episode of the third season gave us plenty of character arcs; however, it left us wondering about Conrad’s bold and heartfelt attempt to win Belly back.
Honestly, Belly’s reply wasn’t the fairytale moment Conrad was chasing. It was a short, polite, and painfully practical reply, which reads,
Dear Conrad, I never thanked you for sending me Junior Mint. So, thank you, and thank you for all your letters. It’s sweet of you to think of me. I finally found a permanent apartment. This is my new address. Hope you’re well.
That’s it. Clearly, there’s no spark or any hidden longing, just gratitude and an update about her new house. Despite that, Conrad makes another bold move and decides to pour his heart out by directly visiting her in Paris. Will she accept him this time? Or break his heart all over again? That’s a discussion for another day.
How Is Belly Moving On From the Fisher Boys?
It’s been three months since Belly moved to Paris, and though she’s struggling, she’s finally finding the happiness in her best chaotic life.
Apparently, she is juggling online classes, two jobs, and the not-so-easy task of adapting to life in the City of Light. And French? Well, it’s still not perfect. Homesick? Too much. Miserable at work? Absolutely. Even then, there’s this sense of independence and aliveness within her in doing things on her own without the constant pull of Conrad or Jeremiah.
After she celebrates Thanksgiving with her new French roommates, she weirdly realizes that she doesn’t need to rush back home to figure herself out. After a call with Laurel, she plans to stay in Paris.
With Christmas around, Belly spends most of it alone, except for a sweet FaceTime with Taylor. As she embraces small joys, there’s a hint of longing. And suddenly, she starts receiving letters and care packages from Conrad; however, even that didn’t stop her heart this time. As she called the letters “regular notes”, it largely hinted that Belly is emotionally steady and choosing herself this time.
By New Year’s Eve, things get more interesting for Belly after she shares a kiss with Benito, teasing a probable rebound. Amid all this, Belly reflects on Susannah on her death anniversary, yet stays grounded in the present by not visiting Cousins.
Throughout her journey in Paris, Belly has let go of both Conrad and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), at least for now. She’s learning to finally do things on her own, prioritize herself, enjoy her independence, and explore life on her terms. Sure, Paris is messy, beautiful, and lonely for her, but that’s exactly what Belly needs to finally move forward.
What Does Conrad Return to Belly?
After years of hiding his feelings for Belly, Conrad is finally being expressive to win Belly back. In The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 episode 10, Conrad proves that his care for Belly is undeniable. During New Year’s Eve, Conrad returns something incredibly sentimental to Belly, her old teddy bear, Junior Mint, with the infinite locket he gave her on one of her early birthdays. And the toy and the locket reflect their bond and shared memories.
Along with the teddy, Conrad also sends a handwritten letter, pouring his heart out. Though we didn’t get to hear that letter, his other letters clearly highlighted how beautifully Conrad is trying to express his feelings and win her back.
This time, Conrad is chasing more than romance; he’s chasing a chance to rekindle their heartfelt story. What happens next in their story is yet to be seen in the finale episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3.
