Sony and Tencent’s relationship might be a bit rough now; however, it wasn’t always like that. As a matter of fact, Sony was ready to work on rehashing The Last of Us in a collaboration project.
Olivier Courtemanche, Head of Mobile at PlayStation Studios, revealed all this in a declaration, which The Game Post took at a glance. This filing revealed that the original plan was to talk about a TLOU project. This is what Courtemanche revealed in the filing:
With respect to Aurora Studios, we went in to the meeting under the impression that they wanted to do a potential collaboration for The Last of Us.
All the controversy aside, the focus should be kept on what Sony wanted to pursue with The Last of Us. It’s the same series of games PlayStation fans have been getting, and it has become a bit stale. Maybe the agreement was supposed to be for the TLOU Online title, but still, it’s the same idea with glitter.
Sony Doubles Down on Re-Releases as Fresh Exclusives Take a Backseat This Generation
If the aggregate first-party releases are to be seen for Sony’s end, the numbers are tiny. At a larger scale, Sony has only been remaking IPs following the initial release of PS5 in late 2020. Furthermore, even Sony’s future with first-party releases in 2026 is underwhelming as well.
With only Marvel’s Wolverine, Saros, and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, there’s nothing much to look forward to. Yes, there are many great third-party releases, but if that’s the case, there’s no use buying a console.
During the PS3 and PS4 generations, Sony was unstoppable with their releases, and each of them slapped. During those times, we got legendary IPs like God of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us, and whatnot.
But in this generation, it’s just the remakes of older hits, which many have played before repeatedly. It’s almost safe to say now, Sony simply gave up on delivering new IPs this generation and only wanted to salvage things through nostalgia.
Fans Question Whether Nostalgia Can Sustain the PlayStation Legacy
Sony has been using the same ace card for generations, and that’s exclusives. To justify the reason to buy a PlayStation has high-quality exclusive titles. On the other hand, Xbox has gained a crowd by promising Game Pass, which gives access to a plethora of titles.
But now that PlayStation doesn’t have that many exclusive releases, fans are slowly losing their reason to keep the PS5 console. Additionally, most of the exclusives even arrive on PC in a matter of a few years, which is taking away the reason why people buy Sony consoles in the first place.
It’s clear enough, the nostalgia-baiting strategy from Sony isn’t quite working now. Do you feel the same way, or are you fine with playing rehashed projects repeatedly? Share with us in the comments.
