Goldie Hawn was emotional after hearing about Diane Keaton’s passing. They co-starred in the hit 1996 comedy movie The First Wives Club, along with Bette Midler, as three divorcées who sought revenge on their ex-husbands. At the time, Keaton was 50 years old and Hawn was 51.
Despite mixed reviews, it was a commercial success, garnering a total of $181 million in worldwide ticket sales. On top of this, it became a cult-classic favorite among middle-aged fans.
A stage musical and a television series were created based on the film, which, for years, had been begging for a sequel. Due to numerous controversies, the project never got off the ground.
Goldie Hawn Mourned Diane Keaton’s Death, Recalled Friendship on The First Wives Club
In a heartfelt post on her Instagram page, Hawn expressed her grief over Keaton’s death. She recalled their happy times working on the set of The First Wives Club
I was blessed to make First Wives Club with you, our days starting with coffee in the makeup trailer, laughing and joking, right through to the very last day of filming. It was a roller coaster of love.
Keaton’s cause of death is yet to be revealed, though multiple outlets reported that there had been a call for medical assistance to the actress’ home. She maintained a private life, though it was known that her health had suddenly declined.
Some fans speculated that her past battle against skin cancer, which also ran in her family, may have caused some complications.
Why The First Wives Club Sequel Didn’t Happen? Controversies Explained
In 2003, Keaton expressed enthusiasm over reprising her role as Annie MacDuggan-Paradis, and a year later, there was a report that a draft was already being written, with the title Avon Ladies of the Amazon. Due to the strike, the project was delayed.
In 2006, Hawn revealed to the New York Daily News that she received a call from the head of the studio, who told her that they should go in for a sequel for the same amount of pay. The actress argued that if there were three male actors returning for a follow-up film, they’d be getting thrice their salary.
In 2016, she gave more disappointing news about the planned sequel, stating that the script was not working. With Keaton’s absence, a continuation movie isn’t likely to happen anytime soon.
