The Cameron Diaz Movie That Made Everyone Stumble Wiggles Into Netflix Top 10

By Mark Moore 10/15/2025

An outrageous Cameron Diaz cult-classic from 1994 is currently dominating the global streaming charts on Netflix. As of October 14, 2025, The Mask is at #9 on the top 10 most-watched list of movies around the world (FlixPatrol).

At the time, the movie grossed an absurd box office profit while also launching Diaz into stardom. However, The Mask‘s reputation has somewhat been sidelined among other comedy classics released in the decades since 1994. It is surprising, to say the least, to watch the Jim Carrey classic now making a resurgence in the mainstream after three long decades.

Cameron Diaz and Jim Carreyʼs The Mask Makes a Resurgence 30 Years Later

Crafted by Loki, the Norse god of mischief, a wooden mask gives its wearer impossible powers and magical abilities. This simple context makes the 1994 movie one of the best comedies of Hollywood, especially with Jim Carrey’s extraordinary physical acting and caricaturish execution.

Moreover, despite being Cameron Diaz’s debut film, The Mask catapulted her to the top of stardom. In hindsight, the film’s popularity may have been in part due to Diaz’s breakthrough role as well as Carrey’s exceptional performance, mixed with a brilliant script that never missed a single beat.

In bleak years as these, filled with critical duds, a lack of good comedy, and an overindulgence in biopics, it is only fitting that The Mask would make a sudden resurgence on Netflix and climb up the ladder to secure a spot on the top 10.

Why The Mask Franchise Failed to Take Off After Its 2005 Sequel

When The Mask came out in theaters, the movie was an incredible hit among critics and audiences alike. With an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film was an immediate Hollywood success, made even better by its huge box office haul.

Made on a meager budget of $18 million, The Mask went on to gross a staggering $352 million (The Numbers), making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 1994 and singlehandedly contributing to the resurgence of swing music in the ’90s. The movie even went on to get nominated at the 67th Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects, which was ultimately won by Forrest Gump.

Such major acclaim made The Mask very suitable for a sequel or even led to a franchise of spin-offs and animated projects. One came a decade later in 2005, Son of the Mask, whose negative reviews and box office performance effectively shot down the hopes for a franchise for the foreseeable future.

Not only did Son of the Mask fail to take control of the reins when the demand was high in the mid-to-late ’90s, but the sequel also shunned all of its original cast. Without Jim Carrey in the lead, the protagonist paled as an agent of chaos and comedy. Cameron Diaz, who was at the peak of her Hollywood stardom in the early 2000s, also wasn’t involved, thus failing to hit home with the fans of the original film.
