The Black Phone Ending Explained: How Does the Grabber’s Fate Set Up the Sequel?

By James Johnson 10/08/2025

Although the ending of Ethan Hawke’s The Black Phone provides a conclusive and final end for The Grabber, the sequel was announced and, in fact, is about to be released in theaters on October 17.

Despite a definitive end, The Black Phone ending scenes depict The Grabber being killed by Finney, from the advice that the ghosts of the other children had given him. He uses the pre-dug pit to trap the Grabber, who also happens to break his ankle on a grate.

He also fills the phone’s receiver with dirt and bludgeons the Grabber with it. Lastly, Finney grabs the telephone’s cord and strangles the Grabber to death with it. Before his death, Finney knocks out Grabber’s mask, who tries to cover his face because of fear.

The police receive a tip (from Gwen’s psychic vision) about the Grabber’s body, following which they find evidence about the serial killer, thus ending his crime spree. However, these final moments set the stage for a sequel quite beautifully.

Its Not Over For Finney and The Grabber in The Black Phone

The whole premise of the first film sets up the fact that Finney and his sister (Gwen) can communicate with the dead and the dead can communicate with the living (via the Black Phone).

Hence, despite the Grabber meeting his fate at the hands of Finney, it doesn’t mean that his death is the finality of it all. The villain could simply communicate with Gwen through her psychic visions while also talking to Finney on the Black Phone.

At the end of the first film, Finney is a changed man. More confident in himself, and knowing the ability to communicate with the dead, Finney takes on a different approach to life, with the film also establishing that both Finney and Gwen had unique hereditary traits.

But… how does any of this connect to the sequel? More importantly, will the Grabber return for Black Phone 2?

Will the Grabber Return for Black Phone 2?

Yes. It has been confirmed that Ethan Hawke will reprise his role as the Grabber alongside Mason Thames’ Finney in Black Phone 2. In fact, Madeliene McGraw will also be reprising her role as Gwen from the first film.

The premise of Black Phone 2 follows Finney being his own self after the trauma in captivity. However, Gwen’s dreams become increasingly erratic as she receives calls on the Black Phone in her dream. She also witnesses three boys being stalked at a winter camp.

Heading to the camp to solve the mystery, they are confronted by none other than the Grabber, who has become even more powerful in death! So yes, Ethan Hawke’s the Grabber will indeed return in Black Phone 2.
