Yuki Tabata has created a magical world in Black Clover, and in a candid interview, the author revealed one of his own regrets with the creation of the manga. Tabata-sensei has realized that the complexity of magic that he imagines cannot always be perfectly transferred to paper.
This means Black Clover fans might never know the full extent of the author’s intentions with the story. In the interview from the manga’s official 2018 guidebook, Tabata revealed the behind-the-scenes process of the manga and how his thought process is translated into the delightful pages of Black Clover.
Yuki Tabata Regrets Not Being Able to Push His Boundaries for Black Clover
In the interview, Yuki Tabata was asked about the vivid and recognizable magic drawn in the series and if the assistants are provided with precise instructions. The author replied:
I guess that’s where you can see my own limitations (laughs). I usually have my assistants draw the magic and explain beforehand how it should look. If my explanation was good, it’s reflected in the drawing. Actually, I would like to come up with much more complicated and crazy magic, but then I can’t explain it properly.
Black Clover is known for its beautiful magical system and spells. Each character has a distinct magical ability, and the spells are visually striking. Needless to say, fans have praised it for its magical effects, which have been brought to life via the detailed artwork. However, achieving this level of clarity is a collaborative effort. At the same time, it impacts creativity.
Tabata revealed that he relies heavily on his assistants for the magical elements in Black Clover. This is expected, since the author has not been physically healthy for some time. Tabata’s regret stems from his desire to let his creativity flow, but it is a challenge to translate it enough for his assistants to execute. Of course, the hectic schedules and deadlines are another factor in the greater scene.
Black Clover’s Author Has Decided to Embrace Simplicity Under Pressure
Despite his regret about the matter, Yuki Tabata seems to have come to terms with the constraints that he faces on a daily basis:
In the meantime, I’ve come to the conclusion that maybe you don’t have to make it unnecessarily complicated. Time is always very short anyway. So I can be glad that the magic seems to be descriptive.
His comments show that there has been a shift in perspective, which also reflects his growth as a mangaka. Time is limited, and chapters need to be published according to schedules. While creativity needs time, there isn’t always enough time for every glorious detail if the chapter needs to be out on time.
The limited time adds another complex factor, and Yuki Tabata recognizes it and has learnt how to compromise accordingly. His approach does not impact the integrity of Black Clover, and the series still delivers visually stunning panels. The author has been focusing on clarity and is glad how descriptive the work can get despite the time constraints. Thankfully, readers of the manga don’t seem to be complaining.
