Taylor Swift’s Album Drop Accidentally Revives Lindsay Lohan’s Cult Moment Hiding on Hulu

By John Moore 10/03/2025

Taylor Swift’s 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, just dropped today on October 3, coincidentally reigniting interest in Lindsay Lohan’s cult classic Mean Girls. If the date sounds familiar, that’s because October 3rd is unofficially known as Mean Girls Day.

If you don’t know the lore, here’s the explanation. In one of the scenes of the classic movie, Lohan’s character Cady Heron’s high school crush, Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett), asks her what day it is. Cady Heron narrates, “On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was.” She replies, “It’s October 3rd.” That brief scene became iconic and turned the date into an annual celebration of all things Mean Girls.

While Swift hasn’t directly confirmed the Mean Girls reference, the singer offered a more personal explanation when she shared the album news on the New Heights podcast. Swifties might already know that October 3 (10/3) adds up to 13, her lucky number. This upcoming album continues that tradition.

Meanwhile, Lohan recently revealed that they accidentally dropped an easter egg of Mean Girls in her new sequel movie, Freakier Friday. In the film, Lohan’s character’s wedding is on the same date as October 3 (via The Hollywood Reporter). As Swift took over the day, fans began revisiting Mean Girls, which is currently streaming on Hulu.

AMC to Distribute Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of Showgirl

Accompanying the album drop, AMC Theatres is releasing Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, an 89-minute movie. It includes the making of the album, the lead music video, The Fate of Ophelia, and intimate behind-the-scenes content. The limited theatrical run spans October 3-5 across 3,500 U.S. locations and over 50 international markets.

Pre-sales exceeded $20 million, making it one of AMC’s top 10 all-time first-day earners. Early estimates project a $30–$35 million domestic debut, with another $10 million expected internationally (via Deadline).

Taylor Swift’s Packed Late Night Show Schedule

Swift is backing the album and film with a heavy media push. She appears on The Graham Norton Show on October 3, 2025. Next, she’ll appear on The Tonight Show on October 6, 2025, and Late Night With Seth Meyers on October 8, 2025. Rumors are swirling about a surprise cameo on Saturday Night Live‘s season premiere (via Deadline).

In addition, The Life of a Showgirl is being promoted through exclusive Target midnight sales, special edition vinyls, and immersive pop-up experiences hosted by Spotify in NYC and TikTok in LA.

As Taylor Swift dominates charts and screens, and Mean Girls finds its way back into the spotlight, fans now have double reason to celebrate October 3 as a Swift holiday or Mean Girls Day.

What does October 3 mean to you now, Swift, Lohan, or both?

Mean Girls is available to stream on Hulu (US).
