Sadie Sink Reflects on Saying Goodbye to Her Stranger Things Character

Sadie Sink had her big break as Max in the Netflix hit Stranger Things, a role she described as a significant part of her identity. “So much of me is Max,” Sink told Harper’s Bazaar. “She was created when I was 14 years old. I poured so much of myself into her.”

She is now set to return as Max in the fifth and final season of the Netflix series. Having played the character for nearly a decade, Sink admitted she became emotional when it came time to think about letting go.

I get very, very emotional when I have to leave a character. For Max, I was like, Oh, this is going to absolutely destroy me.

However, given the cultural phenomenon the series has become, she believes it doesn’t truly feel like goodbye. “But for some reason, it didn’t really feel like I was saying goodbye to her at all,” the actress said, reflecting on the lasting impact of the show and its characters.

Sink also connected the film’s message to her own life. Having started acting at a young age, she acknowledged the trade-offs that came with building her career.

“For every good thing comes a little thing you have to maybe give up,” she said during the interview, adding, “Every day you encounter that.” She also noted the sacrifices her family made to support her.

“It’s a huge sacrifice we make, but one that is well worth it,” she said, admitting that she would change nothing about her career.

Since her breakthrough, Sink has hit new milestones, from starring in Taylor Swift’s All Too Well: The Short Film to the Oscar-winning The Whale. Looking ahead, she is now set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, marking another major step in her rising career.
