Growing up, you have probably seen a couple of SpongeBob SquarePants episodes, or perhaps, currently binge-watching the show’s entire 16-season run, making you familiar with every single character. But, there’s one you surely don’t remember: Grandpa Redbeard.
Here’s a refresher: Grandpa Redbeard is Mr. Krabs’ paternal grandfather, and he’s also a pirate. Actor Dennis Quaid lent his voice to the character in Season 6’s Grandpappy the Pirate episode.
Visiting his grandson, Grandpappy hoped to see him as a pirate, and so Mr. Krabs, who didn’t want to disappoint his grandfather, transformed Krusty Krab into a pirate ship.
Dennis Quaid’s Cameo Took Place In One of SpongeBob SquarePants’ Best Episodes
The premise alone was exciting for viewers because not only did it give a compelling backstory to the extremely business-minded Mr. Krabs, but it also showed how the whole crew held up to the challenge.
Since Mr. Krabs had to convince Grandpappy that he’s a pirate, he dressed his employees as sailors. The clumsy SpongeBob, the dim-witted Patrick, and the grumpy Squidward managed to fool the old folk despite their half-baked efforts.
In the end, the story was a rollercoaster of emotions dealing with teamwork and acceptance. Grandpappy was still happy to see his grandson as an established restaurant owner. It’s all the more fun, too, because viewers would easily recognize Quaid’s voice as Grandpa Redbeard!
The Legacy of SpongeBob Continues: What to Know About the Upcoming Movie
The adventures of SpongeBob SquarePants captivated audiences of all ages, so it’s no wonder that there is another iteration of the beloved animated franchise that’s coming out later this year.
Titled The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, the Derek Drymon film introduces SpongeBob as someone desperately wanting to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs, so he embarks on an adventure to follow the Flying Dutchman.
Sadly, Quaid isn’t returning to voice Grandpa Redbeard, or any character, although the movie boasts an ensemble cast, including Tom Kenny as SpongeBob and Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, both the original voice actors for their respective characters since 1999. Mark Hamill also joins the cast as the voice of the Flying Dutchman.
