In an interview with ScreenRant, Academy Award winner Gary Oldman opened up about the news of lead writer William James Smith’s exit from the hit series Slow Horses after 5 seasons. Since the comedian was the creator and showrunner of the series all this time, Oldman revealed how it took some getting used to, saying:
He has a real skill and I had access to Will, so when I was reading earlier drafts of the script, and they were still in the process of being written, I could text or email Will, or get on the phone with him. So, that took a little getting used to, because there was an ease and a familiarity with him that you don’t have with new people coming in.
And this exit may have affected the performance of the latest season, as in the two episodes that have been released, it has become the weakest-performing season of the Apple TV+ show. Despite that, the series is still scheduled to return for two more seasons with new writers at the helm.
Gary Oldman Reveals the Secret Behind Slow Horses’ Fast Season Turnaround
One thing that has always made Slow Horses
The secret behind this was revealed by Oldman himself in the same interview mentioned above. Here, the Harry Potter star said that after a grueling 9-10 months of making a season, they also scout new directors and additional writers for the next season in advance. He also talked about the idea behind this approach, saying:
We get to really know these characters. We enjoy these people that come into our living room once a week, and then the show ends, and you’ve got to wait two years for it to come back, if it is coming back, an example would be Severance. So, I think if the audience likes the show, they invest their time in it, we want to come back and sort of deliver, so that was the thinking that we could get a quicker turnover.
This is also one of the reasons why the series has been a hit with audiences and critics alike, where, despite the weakness of the latest season, it is still being highly praised in reviews in relation to other shows on the market. And with four more episodes still to come, the season performance may make a drastic turn for the better.
What Can We Expect From Slow Horses Season 5 Episode 3?
After the release of the second episode, where threats are still rising, now for multiple points, it’ll be up to the Slough House team to neutralize them as soon as they can to avoid further attacks.
Therefore, in Episode 3, titled ‘Tall Tales,’ we will witness the group splitting into two teams for two different campaign events to avoid as much risk as possible. At the same time, Flyte will delve deeper into the background of Roddy’s girlfriend to see if she is the suspected ‘Honey Trap’ who is involved with intelligence compromise.
Lastly, we might also see the exploration of the exploding car on the street. The episode might be showing us whether the bombings are coordinated, who’s behind them, and how they tie back to the sabotage and the mass shooting we witnessed earlier.
