Sigourney Weaver Reveals the Themes Alien: Earth Did Right & Where It Can Go Next

In a recent interview with Collider, actress Sigourney Weaver talked about her verdict on FX’s Alien: Earth. Talking about the show, she revealed how amazing it felt to witness the Alien franchise grow in such a manner. She also revealed how deep and unique it was from the original 1979 Ridley Scott film, which she was a main protagonist of, saying:

It’s just exploded some of the themes that have always been part of the Alien series, and I think it’s beautifully cast and beautifully done. I can’t believe it’s television, frankly.

Weaver also gave her thoughts on how she realizes the show is going in an amazing direction, and how she’s excited to see how they execute those ideas and themes in the future.

As stated in the intro, Weaver feels that Alien: Earth is the truest form of the franchise, filled with all the extraterrestrial and human elements in perfect harmony, evident from the positive reviews it has gotten. In terms of what she is expecting next, she said:

I think the scope of it is so much bigger than an Alien project. Fascinating. Much more about our world, what’s going to be happening to it, what’s going to be important, the role of greed.

Therefore, with the release of Episode 6 of the series, it seems like the actress is right on the money with the show’s future. Episode 7 might show us the ugly side of greed and make us question who the real enemy truly is. The aspects of human versus alien, corporate sabotage, and hybrid-centered conflict will come into full head-on collision.

As for the series, it feels like it will be diving even deeper into the world of humanity rather than just Xenomorph horror and murder. The franchise might also look to pivot to more of a post-Ripley narrative, as the prequels have lately been overwhelming.

And with new organisms other than the iconic Xenomorphs being introduced in the series, it is certainly in the cards to witness the origins and more stories revolving around these new alien species. But what the franchise will have to keep a tight grip on is the tone and theme of the FX show, which will shine in the future projects even more.

How Alien: Earth Reinvented the Franchise Like Prey Did For Predator

The biggest way Alien: Earth managed to revitalise the franchise is through the change in perspective. It shifted the focus of the action from the usual deep-space colonies to Earth in 2120, focusing on humanity before Ripley’s era, similar to Prey’s shift into the 1700s, giving a fresh cultural and historical lens on the Predator lore.

The show also leans into corporate dystopian sci-fi as much as it does into horror. It blends the Xenomorph threat with themes of capitalistic greed, technological advancements, and exploitation. This is a return to form for the franchise, which is a callback to the original film with Weaver’s Ripley.

And lastly, the changes brought to the Xenomorph threat itself are why the series seems to be revitalized. Talking at the Austin Film Society (via AVP Galaxy), director and showrunner Noah Hawley said that he wanted to ‘re-mystify the Alien’ and give it the fear factor that was missing from its preceding projects, which focused more on action.
