Disney seemingly wants a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie in the franchise, but it won’t be soon. In a promising comment made by none other than Jerry Bruckheimer himself in an interview with EW, he revealed that he is still interested in the production of the next film. In the interview, Bruckheimer mentioned that there are two separate films that he’s working on:
It’s two different movies. We hope to get ’em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too.
While the reboot film is said to bring back Johnny Depp in his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow, the film led by actress Margot Robbie is a new iteration in the franchise, which is said to be a female-led story. We could’ve seen this earlier if only Disney hadn’t decided to just sit on it and do nothing.
Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Expected Release Timeline: What We Know So Far
As per Bruckheimer’s comments, they are still trying to get the new scripts and production details passed through the executives at Disney, which in itself means some time will be consumed in this process. Although the scripting process itself also needs a little bit of polishing.
In the same interview with EW, the producer talked about how his partner Jeff Nathanson had a good third act of the reboot, but the first two still need a little bit of work, saying:
I think he’s cracked it. He’s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we’ll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act.
Therefore, if the details are finalized and production begins shortly after, then we can expect Pirates of the Caribbean 6 to be released by mid-to-late 2027, or even 2028, provided it doesn’t experience any hiccups in the process.
Recast or Return: Will Johnny Depp Return as Jack Sparrow in Pirates 6?
The good news here is that Depp, who Hollywood recently welcomed back after his public trial in the Heard-Depp case, isn’t opposed to his return to the franchise. Bruckheimer, in the EW interview, revealed that Depp liked what he read, which led to him showing interest in reprising the role of Captain Jack Sparrow.
Here’s a table with more information about the films in the franchise in which Depp has been Jack Sparrow.
Robbie’s film is also being readied to be presented to Disney, for which plans had been in place since 2022 (via Vanity Fair). She revealed that those plans would’ve come to fruition a while back if Disney hadn’t decided not to have anything more to add to the franchise anymore.
The Last of Us Creator’s ‘Weird, Fantastic’ Pirates 6 Script Explained
While the screenplay for the reboot might also be in the process of being developed, the script is already in its final stages, thanks to The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin’s efforts. In a past interview with The Los Angeles Times, He talked about when he initially presented the idea to Disney, he was very skeptical about it. He said:
We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.
And now, as Brukheimer and his partners have taken over the process, we can assume this new development to bring a familiar flavor to the reboot film.
Latest Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Update From Major Star Casts Shadow on $4.5B Franchise
Despite all the hype surrounding the development of the sixth film in the franchise going smoothly, Orlando Bloom’s comments don’t inspire confidence about its future.
In a recent interview on ITV’s This Morning talk show, the star, who played the role of Will Turner in the franchise, revealed that he himself doesn’t know what’s been going on with the production, saying:
There’s been all kinds of things. Who knows? There’s been talk [of a sixth movie]. I can’t say anything at the moment, because I really don’t know. I think they’re trying to work out what it would all look like.
Therefore, while Bruckheimer assures fans about the development of the reboot, the assurance to the fans will only arrive when something official and concrete is revealed to the public soon. Here’s more information on the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and how they performed on the critical scale.
