Luckily, Mabel (Selena Gomez) has some inside information. After visiting Vince (Richard Kind), the world’s most annoying pop star, Althea (Beanie Feldstein) arrives. And she has news. It seems that Althea has been invited to a woman-only poker event in the basement of the building. Moments before, we saw Camila arrange it with Nicky (Bobby Cannavale) months before his death.

However, Oliver calls and invites her to join the investigation into the murderous socialites’ “girls’ night” in The Arconia’s basement casino. On her way, she brings along Detective Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).
Donna tags along, too, because — in an amusing bit—she figures she might as well come now, since it’ll save her from the inevitable phone call from the three podcasters whining about not being able to solve the case. We then learn Charles (Steve Martin) loves magic, Loretta can speak to ghosts, and Mabel has no shot of being one of the girls during ladies’ night.

Why does this matter? It’s a clumsy attempt to shoehorn big-name stars into the plot in a way that feels anything but natural. On the way, Mabel, Loretta, and Donna run into Lorraine Coluca (Dianne Wiest), Lester’s widow, who can’t stop obsessing over how her husband was murdered. So, Loretta invites Lorraine to tag along and help investigate Camila at the party.

At the party, Loretta spots Jennifer Aniston and tells the group she wants to pitch her on playing a “sexy arsonist” in her network television procedural. The group joins Camila at the table, where she loses hand after hand thanks to Donna’s sleight of hand — a setup designed to get all four women to bond.
Wiest’s Lorraine threatens Camila over Lester, prompting Mabel to escort her out of the basement. There, Lorraine mentions that Lester’s elevator crank is missing. That leaves Loretta alone with the socialite, who accuses Donna of cheating Camila. It’s all part of a plan to gain the billionaire’s trust, and it works, as Zellweger’s character experiences a flashback involving a cleaver.

In a comedic bit that feels like filler, the group unknowingly stumbles into a couple’s therapy session while trying to stop one of the residents from selling their unit, which would give buyers control of 51% of the building. Later, Camila confides in Loretta about a flashback involving Nicky on the night he died. It turns out Camila planned to buy up apartments to steal Nicky from Sofia (Tea Leoni) so he could run his own business.

Additionally, when Lorraine blew Lester’s bird whistle, it sent a digital alert to Vince’s phone, activating a bird camera that records activity in the courtyard—also on the night of Lester’s death. When they play the video, Lester is blowing the bird call whistle, knowing it will activate the camera. They watch him fall into the fountain, but do not see who the killer was.

Only Murders in the Building season 2 episode 8 ends with moments later, the building’s other doorman, Randall (Jermaine Fowler), entering the screen. He looks down, picks up the murder weapon, looks around, puts the crank under his coat, and exits to the right of the camera.
