Just when I thought Only Murders in the Building was moving away from the gluttonous outpouring of big-name guest stars that distract from the story, Academy Award winners Renée Zellweger and Christoph Waltz, along with heartthrob Logan Lerman (sorry, Beanie Feldstein—you don’t count), show up at the end of the fifth season’s third episode.
This is already a season featuring Téa Leoni (Madam Secretary), Bobby Cannavale (Ant-Man), Dianne Wiest (Parenthood), Jermaine Fowler (Eenie Meanie), and Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele). Whether these big names will overwhelm the series remains to be seen, but at least the leads are still the main attraction in Only Murders in the Building.
Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Episode 3: What is the Velvet Room?

The Velvet Room is the underground gambling hall and speakeasy built beneath the Arconia at the turn of the 20th century. Rumor has it that even the plans for the Empire State Building were hammered out in that illegal establishment by some of New York City’s leaders. And you have to wonder what kind of insurance rates were built into the building’s master plan?
While in the Velvet Room, they hear Oliver in the vent. The room sits directly beneath Nicky’s dry-cleaning business—where, unfortunately, a dead body has landed on top of Oliver. With his DNA all over the corpse, Oliver stuffs the body into a wheeled laundry hamper and brings it to Charles’s apartment, where they attempt to clean it with alcohol wipes.
Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Episode 3: What Does Mabel Find in Nicky’s Mouth?

Mabel performs an autopsy of sorts, attempting to determine the Post-Mortem Interval (PMI), or time of death. She checks Nicky’s rigor mortis and, without going into tedious details, concludes he died recently, though his muscles have been stiff for hours. She deduces that he’s been thawing, most likely killed, and then stored in a freezer.
Meanwhile, the dead body begins talking to Charles—though it’s all in his head. This mirrors what happened with Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) last season, a figment of his imagination. Charles drags the body back to the dry cleaners, where he overhears two corrupt cops placing Nicky there the night before. By the end of the episode, we learn Charles is ordering medication, possibly for his hallucinations.
Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Episode 3 Ending Explained: Who is the Owner of the Finger?

However, as Charles, Oliver, and Mabel hide behind the bar, one of them pours themselves a drink. All three of those podcast greats catch a glimpse of the billionaire’s hand, which is clearly bandaged.
Zellweger plays Camila White, a hotel magnate worth $47 billion who owns half the city’s properties. Waltz portrays Sebastian Steed, a tech billionaire valued at $53 billion. Lerman takes on Jay Pflug, heir to a pioneering pharmaceutical fortune worth $19 billion. And the one missing a finger? That’s Pflug, and I’m sure we’ll soon discover who has his missing appendage.
