One Piece Chapter 1162 Can Explain Garp’s Real Allegiance in God Valley Incident

By Charles Martin 10/07/2025

The recent spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1162 have revealed Imu’s presence during the God Valley Incident through Saturn, but it also confirms one major detail about Monkey D. Garp. According to the spoilers, Garp and Roger both were shocked to see Imu, and he was angered by the deaths of civilians during the war, which clears his character in a major way.

For the longest time, One Piece fans have accused Garp of supporting the Marines and the World Government despite knowing their real motive. However, these spoilers confirm that he has been disgusted by their actions and is truly trying to change the image of the Marines in One Piece.

Why Garp Was Never Guilty to Begin With?

Since the beginning of One Piece, Oda has portrayed Monkey D. Garp as a man of justice who represents an ideal Marine soldier. However, one aspect of his duty as a Vice Admiral that fans have always debated about is his unintentional contribution to the motives of the World Government and Celestial Dragons, which is filled with corruption and cruelty towards the majority of the people in the One Piece

world.

However, according to the recent spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1162, Garp has been against the Celestial Dragons’ actions since the God Valley Incident. The spoilers pointed out that Garp was shocked at the death of the civilians in God Valley and had no clue about the Native Hunting Competition conducted by the Celestial Dragons. This is why he called Sengoku to discover the details, and thus was disgusted by their actions.

This development more or less proves that even though Garp held a significant position with the Navy, he was unaware of the real corruption of the World Government. When he found out about this, he most likely decided to teach the new generation about the duties of an ideal Marine soldier, trying to bring a change in the faction.

Garp and Luffy’s Indifference to Liberation Compared to Dragon

While Garp’s ideology to rectify the Navy is decent, it doesn’t really prioritize world liberation, which makes his development quite contentious. Unlike his son, who is actively trying to take down the World Government and liberate the One Piece world, Garp’s decisions are more or less guided by responsibility, protecting civilians, and family loyalty. The same is with Luffy, as it has been established that he doesn’t really care about world liberation.

Luffy’s battles are mainly focused on personal loyalty and basic outrage at cruelty rather than ideological commitment towards the One Piece world. He frees people and destroys tyrants when they threaten his friends or innocent bystanders, and he values personal freedom above political disruption, which is quite like what Garp has been doing as a Vice Admiral within the Navy.

Dragon, on the other hand, leads the entire Revolutionary Army with the explicit aim of dismantling the World Government and freeing oppressed nations. He is more connected to the theme of world liberation than his father or his son in One Piece. However, maybe this will change by the time the story reaches the final war.
