Kuzan’s reason for aligning with Blackbeard might have been his hatred for the Celestial Dragons in One Piece. This theory was posted on Reddit by @dallyho4. It says that Kuzan probably has faith in Blackbeard’s power, which made his crew the better choice over joining a group like the Revolutionary Army.
Kuzan joined Blackbeard because…

Ever since Kuzan’s association with Blackbeard was first revealed, fans have been questioning the former Admiral’s reasons. This theory draws a sensible conclusion based on Kuzan’s ideologies and actions so far in One Piece. Chapter 1159’s revelation about Xebec and his strength in the chapters leading up to it further explains why Blackbeard was the best choice for the Admiral.
Blackbeard Is Kuzan’s Key to Go Against the Government and Pirates at the Same Time

Blackbeard’s crew has many infamous pirates. They’re criminal and selfish, exactly the kind of people Kuzan has been fighting against since the beginning of One Piece. This makes his association with the crew truly bizarre. However, Blackbeard aspires to take over the world of One Piece, a goal which isn’t possible without taking down the World Government.
This aspiration could explain Kuzan’s alliance with Blackbeard. The Marines often get crushed in the tussle between the pirates and the world government. Their mission is to protect the people, and sometimes even that comes second to the World Government’s orders. Blackbeard is someone who’s fighting against both pirates and the authorities. He only cares about his own goal and doesn’t bow to anyone.

Moreover, his crew lacks any concept of accountability. His relationship with Xebec which was revealed in chapter 1159 further proved that Blackbeard is capable of reaching the world government before anyone else, just like his father. With him, Kuzan isn’t working with anyone, but against everyone. He’s not answerable to Blackbeard or his crew, yet he is associated with their formidable reputation.
In this way, he’s doing his own thing without people coming for him all the time. If that’s indeed the reason he joined Blackbeard, then maybe Garp would have been a better choice. Or at least, he didn’t have to fight Garp or get him captured. After all, they share the same values and have the same enemy, but maybe it’s Garp’s avoidance that irked Kuzan.
At this point, Blackbeard has become the key to his goal after all else failed him.
Is Kuzan Taking the Path Garp Avoided All Along in One Piece?

Assuming that Kuzan has the same goals as Garp, he has been on the exact opposite journey; a more active one. Garp is the Hero of the Marines, and doesn’t bow to the World Government. He rejected the position of becoming an Admiral so that he didn’t have to follow anyone’s orders. Instead of becoming a part of the system to change it, he maintained a safe distance from it.
Kuzan, on the other hand, became an Admiral. He even fought to become the Fleet Admiral, and that might have brought him closer to his goal. When he failed, he chose the next best option and it turned out to be Blackbeard. For Garp, it was Roger, but he avoided any direct involvement with him.
Kuzan is doing everything in his power, where Garp avoided the morally gray routes. This theory is quite interesting and explains Kuzan’s motivations. Will they turn out to be true? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments.
