One Piece: Blackbeard’s Real Reason to Steal Whitebeard’s Devil Fruit Was to Defeat Imu

Blackbeard stealing Whitebeard’s Gura Gura no Mi was one of the most heartwrenching scenes in One Piece. Yet, Marshall D. Teach might have his own goal due to which he took the Devil Fruit. His goal might not just be simple world domination, but to defeat Imu.

In One Piece, Imu has been referred to as “The World” by Rocks D. Xebec. The fact that Blackbeard keeps demanding the world might not be a call for his endless greed but his thirst for revenge.

The Connection Between Imu, Rocks D. Xebec, and Blackbeard’s “World”

In One Piece, the word “World” doesn’t just refer to the planet at large, but something entirely different. In chapter 1162, Imu possessed Saturn’s body during the historic Godvalley Incident. While Rocks, Whitebeard, and Roger wondered about who Imu was and what was happening, Rocks called Imu “The World.”

There are multiple theories behind why Imu was called a world by Rocks. One of the reasons is that since he was the controller of the World Government from the shadows, that is why he was called the World due to his significant powers and influence.

Unfortunately, Rocks was not able to take down Imu. His desire to take down the World Government remained unfulfilled. Blackbeard might have taken up his father’s mantle, which is why he demands the world, which might be his way of referring to Imu.

Thus, Blackbeard might be ultimately targeting Imu, not other pirates, and taking Whitebeard’s Devil Fruit was just one of the steps in his plan.

One Piece Has Hinted at Whitebeard’s Devil Fruit Having Huge Significance

Whitebeard’s Gura Gura no Mi allows its user to create and control quakes or powerful shockwaves. It is a fearsome Devil Fruit, and it is said that it can even destroy the world. It is also the most powerful Devil Fruit within the Paramecia class. It was because of this fruit that Whitebeard was called powerful enough to destroy the world.

One Piece chapter 1162 makes it clear that “the world” also means Imu. Thus, the Gura Gura no Mi might be a quintessential Devil Fruit required to defeat Imu. It is possible that Blackbeard is only collecting the Devil Fruits that will help him take down Imu.

Thus, Blackbeard stealing Whitebeard’s Devil Fruit wasn’t just a random act of greed to acquire a strong fruit, but an intentional plan to acquire it. Blackbeard might have a few more pawns yet to be placed, after which he might go after Imu with all his might.

One Piece manga is currently available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
