Ian Brennan on How Ed Gein’s Dark Legacy Sparked the Idea for the Show
Monster co-creator and showrunner Ian Brennan has opened up about how Monster: The Ed Gein Story took shape, revealing that the convicted killer’s lasting impact on horror and pop culture became the foundation for the new season of the anthology series.
He told Tudum,
Once we talked about how influential he was and how his crimes, you can find threads of them through pop culture and through horror films — I think that’s when we knew we had a show.
Ed Gein, who committed his crimes in 1950s rural Wisconsin, has long haunted the cultural imagination. His twisted legacy inspired iconic works like Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs.
“It’s really mind-blowing how influential one strange man in the middle of Wisconsin in a barn can be,” Brennan said, adding, “I can’t think of another person who is really that influential to a genre of television and film.”
Following Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez Brothers, and now Ed Gein, the Netflix anthology series is developing a fourth season focused on Lizzie Borden, who will be portrayed by Ella Beatty.
