MCU Star’s Forgotten Gem Surpasses The Conjuring as Fans Question Last Rites Hype

Despite all the buzz surrounding The Conjuring: Last Rites across the globe, the original film in the franchise is still scaring the bejeezus out of people on streaming. Unfortunately, it still lags behind Paul Rudd’s 2024 comedy film Friendship by A24 films, which is topping the streaming charts on HBO Max (via FlixPatrol) as of September 7, 2025.

And when it comes to the hype for the latest and last film of The Conjuring franchise, it seems like it has been trailing away, especially with its performance in the cinemas. Thus, we will talk about what happened with the film and how it met the fan expectations.

Is The Conjuring: Last Rites Worth All the Hype?

On the box office front, The Conjuring: Last Rites has set milestones for the franchise, as it earned a whopping $83 million domestically in its opening weekend. And in the international markets, the opening weekend was met with a $104 million figure, bringing the total to a staggering $187 million (via Box Office Mojo).

At the same time, though, despite this movie being stated to be the end of the iconic The Conjuring franchise, it didn’t manage to blow the fans away like they were hoping it would. With a 56% TomatoMeter Score and a 79% PopcornMeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes, expectations were mostly met, but fell short heavily in some areas.

One of the biggest points of contention for many was the messy ending of the film and some minor plot holes that were present in the movie, which were dealbreakers for many, especially as it’s the last film of the entire franchise. Even some narrative decisions, if executed differently or removed, may have made it better.

The movie threw in plenty of ties and callbacks to the Warrens’ past cases, which felt like a great nostalgia trip that pulled fans in more than the flaws pushed them out. At the end of the day, if you can look past a few small setbacks, it pretty much gave fans what they were hoping for.

A prequel that revitalized the Annabelle spin-off series by adding to it a chilling and surprisingly emotional narrative with its orphanage setting and old-time dark atmosphere.

A really solid sequel that gave us some exceptionally creepy moments with the Crooked Man and the Nun storyline. Set around the London Enfield case, it kept the scares coming while also showing more of Ed and Lorraine’s bond.
