Matt Reeves recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and shared some details about his upcoming DC Elseworlds movie, The Batman 2. The biggest update was regarding the villain, as Reeves shared that this villain has “never really been done in a movie before.” From Reeves’ comments, we have a few ideas of who this villain could be.
During the interview, Reeves also teased that the film would focus more on Bruce Wayne than Batman. In that sense, Reeves could bring one villain, who was Wayne’s childhood friend, into the picture. Tommy Elliot developed a hatred for the Waynes after they stopped him from murdering his father.
He grew up into a psychopathic murderer known as Hush. This villain eventually learns that Bruce Wayne is behind the Batman mask and wants to destroy both his identities. Hush gets plastic surgery to look just like his old friend, which would be interesting for fans to see on screen. Earlier, insider Daniel Richtman shared that Hush was the main villain of the second Batman film (via @HollywoodHandle).
Another villain(s) who hasn’t appeared on the screen could also fit perfectly with Reeves’ notion of a Bruce Wayne film. The Court of Owls is a mysterious criminal organization comprised of Gotham’s wealthiest and most influential. They work in the shadows and influence how things get done in Gotham.
They have a legion of secret agents, whom they call the Talons. They do the dirty work for the council. This Batman arc has the perfect setting to become a crime drama, where Bruce/Batman could come down on the corruption in the city. It would keep the narrative grounded and subtle, just like Reeves wanted.
We also discovered which villain won’t be appearing in The Batman 2. According to Reeves, Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone won’t be appearing in the film (via MTV). The actress, who won an Emmy for her performance in The Penguin
Reeves also shared that he had no clue whether a third Batman film would happen. However, he expressed his interest in entering the DCU once he is done with The Batman films.
James Gunn Addressed Rumors About Hush As The Batman 2 Villain
The rumors of Hush entering the DC live-action universe have been circling the internet for some time. In August, James Gunn addressed the rumors after a fan questioned him about bringing the comic villain to The Batman 2. Gunn answered the fan on Threads, “Again everything you’ve heard is a total guess or made up.”
However, it should also be noted that Gunn did not shut down the possibility of his appearance either. At this point, Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin are still working on the script. The project still has a long road to travel. Reeves recently addressed this delay during his interview with THR.
He shared, “It’s been a journey that is taking longer than I would’ve wanted for a lot of reasons, a lot of personal reasons.” However, he shared that he felt it was “the best script we could possibly write.” The principal photography will begin only next year. Reeves shared:
We’re getting ready. We’re basically entering prep. We’ll be making the movie in the spring.
While Reeves isn’t entirely sure of any decisions being made at DC, he hinted at the Emmys that he would love to do more spin-offs in the Elseworlds universe. He shared, “There are things they know we would love to do, and those conversations may begin again when it’s appropriate” (via Collider).
Matt Reeves Says The Batman 2 Will Take the Superhero Into Unexplored Territories
During his interview with THR, Matt Reeves revealed how the Batman story was unprecedented in his sequel. The director mentioned how much Robert Pattinson liked the script. He shared that he knew Pattinson would love it because of how the story puts this version of Batman in situations that other movies or shows haven’t explored. He shared:
He’s Batman, so if he [Robert Pattinson] doesn’t like it, not good. So, I was super excited because I thought that he really would [like it] because the things that it does for his character, for Batman, and for Bruce has never been done before in this way.
He further added:
And I had a feeling he would respond in this way, the fact that he did was incredibly encouraging. And of course, I’m nervous every time anyone reads it because we put all this passion into it but you hope people connect to what you’re trying to do.
He also shared that The Batman 2 is also a detective story, adding that he would like to keep a tight wrap on things so that he could protect the secrets. He shared:
Because of what the first movie was and what [The Batman: Part 2] is, which is so much a detective story, the idea of trying to protect the secrets of the movie is super important because it’s a mystery. That would be an extra level of heartbreak if that part of it started getting out. You wanna keep the surprise so the fans can have the fun experience that I always love going to the movies, which was to go and be surprised.
After the success of The Penguin, fans expect nothing short of greatness from Reeves and his team. They obviously want the five years of waiting to be worth what the film has to offer.
