According to an insider report, Elizabeth Olsen has a new role to play in the upcoming MCU team-up event, Avengers: Doomsday. Unlike her current arc as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch of Earth-616, she will portray an alternate universe variant of her character.
In a Q&A session, Marvel insider Alex Perez revealed (via Cosmic Circus):
I heard we’d be getting a Wanda variant from the X-Men universe in Avengers: Doomsday, which is a universe where Magneto is finally ruling Genosha as he had always pictured it; and we’d have like a “royal family” type of situation with Erik, Pietro, Wanda, and Polaris.
This is an idea that has been pushed since Multiverse of Madness, and then Deadpool and Wolverine, but it never feels like the right fit because it feels like it takes away from the overall plot. However, the main point they’d like to explore with Wanda is the father-daughter relationship with Erik.
Although Olsen will not be replaced in the role, her character will be subjectively different in terms of character backstory, motivations, and personality. She will have none of the shared experiences as the Earth-616 Avengers, and neither will she recognize her found family among them.
After the volcanic experience that the audience suffered through in Multiverse of Madness, it’s safe to say that no one wants to see a repeat of that in the chaotic battlefield of Doomsday
What the New Scarlet Witch Rumor Means For Elizabeth Olsen’s Future in the MCU
Avengers: Doomsday will be the real multiverse of madness in Marvel. In the Doctor Strange sequel, Wanda Maximoff was effectively killed off and buried under a mountain for good measure. Though her revival was teased for a while in Agatha, it was only a simple easter egg and didn’t amount to anything substantial.
However, Wanda’s arc in Doomsday, especially as an X-Men universe variant, leaves a door open for her presence in the MCU for many more years to come.
When all is said and done with the Multiverse Saga, Kevin Feige will push the beginning of a new era with the Mutant Saga. Considering how Earth-616 Wanda had no relation to Magneto whatsoever, the Doomsday variant can be the perfect continuation of her arc after Secret Wars in the new X-Men films.
Moreover, Olsen’s veteran presence will also help ground the new era in some old-world nostalgia, while helping guide and direct the nascent Mutant Saga toward a bigger vision.
Scarlet Witch’s Sacrifice In Secret Wars Is the Only Good Farewell For Olsen’s Wanda
Elizabeth Olsen has been in Marvel for over a decade now. From Avengers: Age of Ultron to Multiverse of Madness, her arc has undergone one of the most radical transformations, from the unwitting accomplice of a genocidal robot to a selfless Avenger to a tragic villain to a demonic nightmare.
With so much trauma and unrelenting suffering in Wanda’s life (from her scarred childhood to Vision’s death), one would hardly wish such horror and tragedy on even their worst enemy. But now, Doomsday already has another new role lined up for the Scarlet Witch to inhabit: as the royalty of Genosha.
Every great character worth their salt has had an iconic farewell: Iron Man, Black Widow, Gamora in Endgame, and Loki in Infinity War. Though the latter was given a worthy resurrection arc in the Disney+ series, the same cannot be said for every other character that follows.
The best, most peaceful, and honorable way for Elizabeth Olsen to exit the multi-part franchise will be to sacrifice her character for the greater good. Scarlet Witch’s sacrifice play in Secret Wars is the only good and clean exit that Olsen’s MCU arc is ever going to get.
