Lord of Mysteries Episode 13 Review: A Finale Marked by Tragedy and New Beginnings

Spoiler Alert !!!
Heavy spoiler warnings for Episode 13 of Lord of Mysteries!

After the horrifying cliffhanger of Episode 12, I couldn’t wait to tune back into Lord of Mysteries, only to have my heart crushed. Episode 13, which is the final episode of Season 1, is equal parts devastating and gorgeous. It’s a fitting farewell until the next season comes out, but it’s not the only thing we say farewell to.

As we’ve experienced throughout Lord of Mysteries, death is no stranger to the Nighthawks. I haven’t forgotten Old Neil’s death and Kenley’s graphic demise. The threat of the True Creator’s spawn isn’t light, and throughout Episode 13, they are losing. If I believed it was intense before, I was, once again, so wrong. However, I’m also left heartbroken by Lord of Mysteries, yet quite curious.

Lord of Mysteries Episode 13 Will Crush Your Heart and Make You Need Season 2

Episode 13 is nothing short of a masterpiece. I felt a variety of emotions, from beginning to end. The transformed Megose continues to attack Klein, Dunn, and Leonard, who are fighting to stall. They know they can’t beat the True Creator’s spawn, not without a great cost. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the fight.

In true Lord of Mysteries fashion, someone had to die. We see Dunn Smith, the calm and kind captain of the Nighthawks, on the frontlines, but there’s a crushing weight to this, unlike the other times. In Episode 13, it’s as if he knows this is the end. For him, however, it’s worth it if it saves his colleagues and Tingen City. He uses Saint Selena’s Ashes, which transforms the battlefield into a field of blue flowers.

That isn’t the part that devastated me. When Dunn begins his sacrifice and goes head-to-head against Megose, we see the spirits of the deceased Nighthawks, including Old Neil and Kenley. The visual of them surrounding Dunn is imprinted in my mind. The slight smile, hearing Klein declare victory, followed by him falling to the ground, made my heart drop. His last call to Daly rubbed salt on the wound. The tears began and didn’t stop.

Dunn’s isn’t the only death we witness. At least, not technically. Ince Zangwill reveals himself as the mastermind and kills Klein. My jaw dropped at how graphic it was, but also, this cemented Lord of Mysteries as one of the best horror thrillers. The antagonists are impeccable, ambitious, and ruthless. All of this is tied together with the gorgeous animation.

Melissa and Benson grieve Klein, and then see a glimpse of Azik. However, all hope is not lost. Klein is alive. This is the part that confused me, but also let me breathe. However, I can’t help but feel terrible for his siblings. When Klein dressed up as a clown and gave them the bright yellow flowers, a bittersweet feeling settled in my heart. Overall, it’s a solid setup for Season 2, which sees his rebirth as Sherlock Moriarty.

The Finale Cements Lord of Mysteries as a Masterpiece

I admit, when I started Lord of Mysteries, the first few episodes had me intrigued, yet lost. It picked up during the second half, and I never expected such death and destruction. The lore has never been quite this interesting in any horror animated series. I got attached to several characters in a short amount of time, which makes these deaths hurt all the more.

Moreover, if you’ve lost hope in the Isekai genre, Lord of Mysteries is sure to satisfy and redeem it. Other series that deal with similar themes should take note. This is how you deal with transmigration.

Klein isn’t a simple protagonist; we actually see how his modern life affects his personality, but he also feels the weight of being someone else. The ending leaves his fate up in the air, now reborn and assuming the identity of Sherlock Moriarty. However, it’s still heartbreaking that he thought of his siblings first, even when they aren’t really his siblings.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my journey with Lord of Mysteries. I can’t wait for the upcoming seasons to continue the series and build the world to new heights. Episode 13 did not fail to deliver the emotions and intrigue of Volume 1’s ending.
