Kevin Costner Left Kelly Reilly in Tears: What Happened Between Him and Wes Bentley in Yellowstone?

By Paul Johnson 10/09/2025

Kevin Costner allegedly had a near-physical fight with Wes Bentley on the sets of Yellowstone following a mutual disagreement, which even left fellow co-star Kelly Reilly in tears, per recent reports. In fact, the situation is said to have gone so out of hand that it even reportedly led to the production of the show getting shut down for a little while.

In a new, wide-ranging feature on the Dances with Wolves star by The Hollywood Reporter, it is revealed that Costner, who played the lead role of the Dutton family monarch John Dutton and also served as an executive producer on the show, allegedly pushed Bentley to “ditch” showrunner Taylor Sheridan’s script and play the scene differently.

However, Bentley, who played the character of Jamie Dutton in the lore, pushed back on Costner in response, reportedly saying that he had signed up for a “Taylor Sheridan show, not a Kevin Costner production.” This response didn’t quite sit well with the two-time Oscar winner, as claimed by a source who was present at the time of the incident.

Thus, in his response, the Waterworld star proceeded to “lunge” at Bentley. This led to the two co-stars pushing and shoving each other until they had to be separated, though no punches were thrown in the mix. Kelly Reilly, on the other hand, was left in tears, per an eyewitness, and the production for the Western drama had to be briefly shut down.

Kevin Costnerʼs Clash With Wes Bentley Led to Him Butting Heads With Taylor Sheridan

While Costner has long left the Yellowstone saga, this incident is alleged to be what kick-started the actor’s reported feud with showrunner Sheridan.

As per further details from The Hollywood Reporter, a representative for The Bodyguard declined to comment on the reported situation. One of Bentley’s representatives, on the other hand, reportedly confirmed that this physical clash indeed took place between Costner and Bentley on the sets of the show.

Bentley’s representative called it a “work-related argument during an emotional and physically tough scene,” all the while adding that the issue was “discussed and resolved.”

At the same time, as the feature noted, this was the point from where Costner and Sheridan initially started to “butt heads.” Not to mention, even when he left the show to focus on his own Western project, the Horizon saga, it was reported that the actor’s and the showrunner’s clashes on the show also contributed to its halt, so that’s that too.

What Is Kevin Costner Up To Now?

After exiting the Yellowstone franchise, Kevin Costner donated his full time and support to his self-created Horizon franchise. In fact, he even put some of his own money into the making of this Western saga. But the results weren’t quite satisfactory, as the actor was met with a brutal box-office disaster.

According to reports from sources like Deadline and Variety, the budget tag for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 ranged between $50 million to $100 million, with the second film expected to boast the same numbers. Unfortunately, the flick failed devastatingly at the global box office, earning only $38.8 million (via The Numbers). Not to mention, the lawsuits that have entailed the saga, with its legal back-and-forth still pending on multiple fronts.

Still, Costner seems to be optimistic about his future. For one, he is currently working on The Gray House, a Western flick for Prime Video, as well as Honeymoon with Harry, a comedy film with Jake Gyllenhaal. Hopefully, this time around, things will work out for the better for him.
