By Robert Taylor 10/14/2025

The 2003 romantic comedy, Something’s Gotta Give, gave Hollywood one of its most iconic love triangles between Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and Keanu Reeves‘ characters. It is in the memory of the enduring rom-com that the latter has now spoken up about his co-star and on-screen love interest, Keaton, who passed away on October 11, 2025, aged 79.

During the screening of his latest film in New York, Reeves took a minute to recall the late legend in an interview with E! News, saying:

Total pro. She was very nice to me. Generous, generous artist and a very special, unique person.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he further praised Keaton, saying, “I feel really lucky to have had the chance to work with such a wonderful, extraordinary, special person. She’s one of a kind.”

Something’s Gotta Give was the only time Reeves and Keaton worked together on the big screen. However, the pair did go on to reunite at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020 to present the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Keanu Reeves’ On and Off-screen Chemistry With Diane Keaton

Somethings Gotta Give may have given the audience a sigh-worthy on-screen romance between Keanu Reeves and Diane Keaton, but their chemistry fanned the flames surrounding their personal lives long after the film ended.

In 2005, rumors swirled about the Matrix star ending his relationship with his then-girlfriend to pursue Keaton (The List). Although neither actor confirmed their alleged romance, Keaton playfully declared during an Oprah Winfrey interview in 2006: Im going to marry him. He likes an older woman.”

Meanwhile, life reflected art when the love triangle in Somethings Gotta Give was translated into real life. Like the movie, Reeves was not the only man whom Keaton adored. In the 2006 Oprah interview, she also revealed:

Heres the thing about Jack [Nicholson]. I love him. Hes the man I love… but he doesnt feel that way about me.

Although the rumors about Reeves and Keaton have died down in the decades since, some fans still believe in an alternate ending to Somethings Gotta Give, where Keaton’s Erica ended up with Reeves’ Julian – a theory that even the film’s director, Nancy Meyers, encouraged in an Instagram post (Deadline) after their funny, sizzling reunion at the 2020 Oscars ceremony (YouTube).

Something’s Gotta Give Director Pays Homage to Late Legend Diane Keaton

Something’s Gotta Give writer-director Nancy Meyers took to Instagram to pay tribute to her leading actress, Diane Keaton, on 13 October, saying:

These past 48 hours have not been easy… we have lost a giant. A brilliant actress who time and again laid herself bare to tell our stories. As a woman, I lost a friend of almost 40 years – at times over those years, she felt like a sister because we shared so many truly memorable experiences. As a filmmaker, I’ve lost a connection with an actress that one can only dream of.

After praising Keaton for her talent and professionalism, Meyers signed off her tribute on an emotional and personal note, claiming:

She was fearless, she was like nobody ever, she was born to be a movie star, her laugh could make your day and for me, knowing her and working with her — changed my life. Thank you Di. I’ll miss you forever.

The Nancy Meyers film, Something’s Gotta Give, earned Diane Keaton her fourth and final Oscar nomination in the Best Actress category. Below is a list of all other interesting details about the 2003 film:
