Julia Roberts Confirms My Best Friend’s Wedding 2 After ‘Anti-Feminist’ Movie of 2025

After the polarizing reception to Julia Roberts’ #MeToo-themed drama, After the Hunt, Julia Roberts, in an interview with Variety, confirmed she’s in talks to reprise her stint as Julianne for a sequel to My Best Friend’s Wedding. The sequel to the iconic rom-com, which solidified the actor’s status as the undisputed queen of rom-coms, is currently in early development.

When asked if Roberts’ return in My Best Friend’s Wedding 2, the Notting Hill star noted, “they’re talking to me”, sparking interest from Luca Guadagnino, who then volunteered to helm the feature.

Everything We Know About My Best Friend’s Wedding Sequel So Far

Back in July, Collider broke the news that Sony had tapped Celine Song to pen the follow-up to the beloved rom-com after Dermot Mulrone teased that there had been talks about the sequel while promoting The Hunting Wives (via New York Post).

Although the line-up has yet to be unveiled as the follow-up still remains in early stages of development, given Roberts’ recent revelation and Mulrone’s previous comments, it’s safe to assume the band is likely getting back together.

This isn’t the first time the OG crew has showcased interest in revisiting their characters decades later, as back in 2018, Roberts revealed (via EW) that she wonders where their characters would be now. Mulrone also confessed to being down for the follow-up, adding:

I’ll tell you that movie has wormed its way further and further under my skin, and I see more and more layers of how it holds meaning and sustains as a piece, and obviously it’s always been irresistible. I think there’s only about four people on Earth that could make a movie like that, and they include Rupert, Cameron, Julia, and me. So, let’s have at it

Rupert Everett also remains hopeful about joining the venture. As for Cameron Diaz, considering she concluded her hiatus from acting with Back in Action, there’s a good chance we’ll indeed see the OG cast return.

Julia Roberts Defends After the Hunt Amid Anti-Feminist Accusations

Roberts’ remarks about the sequel’s state come in the wake of the controversy surrounding After the Hunt, which opened to divisive reactions at the Venice Film Festival. The movie sees Roberts’ professor investigating a s-xual misconduct allegation made by her mentee (Ayo Edebiri) against her colleague, played by Andrew Garfield.

Currently standing as Guadagnino’s lowest-rated feature so far, the movie drew criticisms for allegedly undermining the progress of the feminist movement. When posed with the accusations, the Notting Hill star defended the movie’s approach, clarifying that After the Hunt is not intended to make definitive statements but rather to place the camera within an existing situation filled with ambiguity (via Variety).

We’re not making statements; we are portraying these people in this moment in time. I don’t know about controversy, per se, but we are challenging people to have conversation.

With the movie a few weeks away from arriving in theatres, it’ll be interesting to see how moviegoers receive it. As for the rom-com sequel, with the Past Lives creator writing the script, here’s hoping it won’t fall into the same trap as other comeback sequels.
