James Gunn is yet to announce the casting for Wonder Woman in his revamped DCU, but he just gave an update about a major factor that previously appeared to be pretty significant to consider in the casting: The character’s “extreme height”, which he recently said is not “the most important factor in casting WW.”
Taking to his Threads handle, he replied to a fan comment curious about Gunn’s thoughts on the character’s height, in general, and if actresses under 5’9’’ could still take on the role of Diana Prince. The DC co-CEO wrote:
I don’t think extreme height is the most important factor in casting WW. That’s all I said earlier as well. I never said I didn’t feel good about her being taller than Superman – I just said that would never be what I considered most important in her casting.
Gunn previously said that finding a physically imposing and talented actress to play the character would be hard for him. But his latest comments inevitably mean that the new Clark Kent, David Corenswet’s height – which is 6’4’’, by the way – won’t be that big a factor in choosing the best actress to play Diana Prince, either.
James Gunn Previously Commented on Fan-Castings for Wonder Woman
For the non-comic readers, Wonder Woman is actually taller than both Batman as well as Superman in the comics. And since James Gunn is trying to bring out live-action pieces as closely adapted from the comics and source material as ever, choosing the best actress for the role would be a pretty tough choice.
That said, previously, Gunn also took some time to comment on a few fan-castings for the role of Prince. At the time, though, he seemed to keep Corenswet’s height factor in sincere regard. For one, when a fan said Game of Thrones alum Gwendoline Christie would be “perfect” for the role, he emphasized that she was “still shorter than Corenswet” on Threads.
As for the others, one suggestion had the filmmaker saying, “Not good. I don’t know where I’d find an accomplished and talented actress 6’5’’ or over.” Then, for another, he once again put due emphasis on the Superman portrayer’s height to turn down another fan-casting choice, saying, “No she’s 6’3 (and a very very lovely person btw) and he’s 6’4.”
Judging from these responses, it’s evident that Gunn must have really been hoping to take a serious note of the height factor in Diana Prince’s casting as well, previously. But, like he said, finding a good actress taller than Corenswet wouldn’t be an easy choice, so not holding the height factor that significantly would really help in a proper casting decision.
Fans Are More Concerned About Wonder Womanʼs Acting Over Her Height
After James Gunn’s recent confirmation that he won’t be holding the height factor in such high regard while choosing the talent to play the Amazonian superheroine, fans are expressing their agreement with him. While some fans are looking at this as a good decision from Gunn, others are more concerned about the chosen star’s acting and performance over her height.
Here’s what they have to say on X:
I just hope WW is buff and not skinny pic.twitter.com/VB3NKZaeAS
We just need someone that can actually ACT and is not a piece of shit😭🙏🏾…
Anyway James u know wat to do. Elizabeth Debicki as Wonder woman, let's get that ball Rolling🙂↕️… pic.twitter.com/CRsZ3aAs1H
exactly. just hire an actress who actually act unlike gal gadot.
We need a good actress who can ACT first and foremost they can make her taller with camera angles and soapboxes, she can gain muscle and bulk up. We need someone who can embody the character and can act their ass off. pic.twitter.com/94DaczPZtD
Been trying to tell y’all this. There’s not a lot of actresses above 5’11. There’s not a lot of great actresses above 5’11. Making height a requirement would limit Wonder Woman substantially.
Ya I mean if we are trying to get a good actress who fits the role and is 6ft or taller you really narrow the pool of actors to pick from… just should find the best actor who isn’t like 5ft ya know
I agree 100% her height should not be his primary goal when casting
Of course, these fan concerns are important, since having a height-accurate actress cast in the role only to receive a wooden performance from her isn’t really what anyone wants.
