Peacemaker Season 2 finale left fans with their jaws dropped to the floor, and James Gunn is not sorry. Just when things finally seemed to be going good for Chris Smith, Rick Flag Sr. swoops in with a last-minute bomb that no one could have seen coming.
Gunn’s reaction? It is what it is. Basically, the showrunner told us all that there’s nothing we can do about what happened at the end of Peacemaker Season 2, and that we should just learn to live with it.
He said, “Yes, that was the ending. No, I’m not sorry…No, you cannot DM me about it. Okay, fine, one DM.” Check it out:

Gunn’s unapologetic reaction comes after he hyped the season finale, calling it the craziest, wildest episode yet. On Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, he said, “Oh my gosh. Next episode, I will say, is definitely, I can guarantee, it’s the craziest, wildest, most insane and wonderful episode of ‘Peacemaker’ we’ve ever produced. So, I can’t wait for people to see it.“
Unfortunately, it ended up being a bit of a disappointment for fans who were expecting something crazy, like Gunn said, and his video is proof that this is what we are getting, whether we like it or not.
You may or may not have liked how the season ended, especially after waiting years for an update on Chris and the squad; however, you have to admit that the cliffhanger left you shell-shocked. Well, Gunn’s absolutely unapologetic about it.
How Did James Gunn Come up With Salvation and Checkmate?
After bailing John Cena‘s Chris out of prison, the 11th Street Kids unite with Sasha Bordeaux, Langston Fleury, and Judomaster, forming their own organization, Checkmate.
On the other hand, Frank Grillo‘s Rick discovers a planet, Salvation, with an Earth-like atmosphere, and it is soon revealed that he plans to lock away all the metahumans on Earth on it, starting with Chris.
A.R.G.U.S. agents kidnap Chris just as he leaves his residence, bringing him to Rick. They trick the hero into the otherworld and leave him locked there with no one around except a growling noise in the distance that did not sound like anything on Earth.
Talking about how Gunn decided to bring the concept of Salvation and Checkmate into the DCU, he told Deadline that these two elements were always going to be a part of the season.
Well, those are the two things that were always a part of this season. So when we sat down, even before I sat down with the writers room in DC, I had sort of mapped out what I thought the general story was, and two important aspects to that were Checkmate and especially Salvation, so those were things that I had pitched to everybody before we ever came into DC, and then after we came into DC and we met with the writers room and worked things out a little bit more.
He added that Checkmate and Salvation play into the “overarching story” he aims to tell in the rebooted DCU.
Will There Be a Third Season of Peacemaker?
Given the fact that Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger, it seems obvious that Gunn will return with a third one day or another. As of now, though, Peacemaker‘s return is the last thing on his mind.
He stated, “No, this is about the wider DCU and other stories in which this will play out right now…this is about the future of the DCU. It’s an important character.”
However, Gunn did admit that he’s never going to say never and just because he isn’t planning a third season at the moment, “doesn’t mean that there won’t be.”
Gunn teased the future of Cena and other Peacemaker actors when asked if they would be reprising their roles in films like Supergirl and Man of Tomorrow. Needless to say, he wasn’t going to just give away spoilers. He answered, “Well, we’ll have to see. That’s a secret.”
Now, all there’s left to do is sit back and wait for the next season to drop, which could take its sweet time if we take history into consideration.
