With Monster: The Ed Gein Story out now, Netflix has already started working on Season 4 of the popular true-crime anthology series. The show, which began with The Jeffrey Dahmer Story in 2022, is set to return with another chilling installment.

According to Deadline, Netflix confirmed Season 4 in July 2025, ahead of the release of The Ed Gein Story, revealing that the new season will focus on Lizzie Borden, the infamous Massachusetts woman tried and acquitted for the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother. Here’s everything we know so far about the next season’s story, cast, and release details.

What Is Monster Season 4 About?

After Jefferey Dahmer, the Menendez brothers, and Ed Gein, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan are set to bring the chilling story of Lizzie Borden to life in the next installment of Netflix’s hit true crime anthology, Monster.

Lizzie Borden was an American woman accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1892, becoming one of the most notorious figures in true crime history (Britannica).

The brutal killings shocked the public and became one of the most famous murder cases. Lizzie was tried for the murders but was acquitted due to lack of evidence, though many people still believed she was guilty.

The story has inspired multiple adaptations over the years, including the 2015 series The Lizzie Borden Chronicles featuring Christina Ricci, along with the 2018 thriller Lizzie starring Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart.

Netflix has already cast Ella Beatty in the lead role of Lizzie Borden. Joining her in the new season are Vicky Krieps, Rebecca Hall, Billie Lourd, and Jessica Barden. Other details about the series remain under wraps.

The production is reportedly set to begin this fall with Max Winkler directing the first episode. Netflix has yet to reveal a release date for the next season of the true crime drama anthology.

Will Charlie Hunnam Return in Monster Season 4?

After portraying the notorious serial killer Ed Gein in the third installment of Monster, Charlie Hunnam could possibly return to Season 4 of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series.

According to Nexus Point News via Variety, Hunnam is in conversation to return to the next season of the anthology series as Lizzie’s father, Andrew Jackson Borden. Hunnam is not the only Monster actor to return to the next installment.

Vicky Krieps, who played Ilse Koch, a Nazi war criminal in The Ed Gein Story, is taking on the role of Borden’s live-in maid, Bridget Sullivan, in the next season.

Hunnam has received widespread praise for his performance in The Ed Gein Story. However, when asked in a later interview with Variety, the actor declined to comment on whether he is returning to the anthology series, keeping his potential involvement uncertain so far.
