By Brian Jackson 10/14/2025

Will Dean Ambrose return to WWE? A question that the wrestling fans have been asking for quite some time. On October 8, 2022, Tony Khan, the President and CEO of AEW, took to social media (via X) and tweeted how Jon Moxley has signed a five-year contract extension with the budding wrestling promotion brand. Check out the tweet below:

I'm excited about tonight's huge announcement that @AEW World Champion @JonMoxley has signed a 5 year contract extension!
It's fitting that Mox will be in action to kick off the first night of Year 4 of AEW up NEXT on @TNTdrama, with 2 hours live #AEWRampage + #AEWBOTB4 TONIGHT!

The news was made official by the official social media of All Elite Wrestling (via X), further stating how Moxley has expanded his role into mentoring and coaching talent. With the contract being signed in 2022, it means that he is bound to be with them till 2027, denying his return and becoming an invaluable part of the company.

During an exclusive interview (via SI) in 2022, Moxley explained that he signed the deal because he does not “plan on going anywhere else.” Additionally, he stated that he is happy with them and that he does not have any problem in the world, making it a perfect fit for him. Nevertheless, a lot of changes have taken place in WWE, including the exit of Vince McMahon, which has made so many wrestlers return to the brand.

Fans Grow Optimistic About Dean Ambrose’s Comeback Following WWE’s Latest Stunt

Dean Ambrose made his debut alongside Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins as part of The Shield in 2012, where they grew from being the henchmen of Triple H’s The Authority to being The Hounds of Justice. Together, they raised the bar of a WWE faction, where each of them became the Grand Slam Champion and even had a pretty successful individual run in the company.

Following the first episode of RAW after Crown Jewel, Seth Rollins was betrayed by The Vision. Both Roman Reigns and Rollins are feuding with The Vision, and Brock Lesnar could potentially join them. Interestingly, WWE Vault started to livestream a video titled “The Complete History of The Shield.”

The fans were now buzzing on social media about how this could be a major sign that Triple H has started working on the return of The Lunatic Fringe for another Shield reunion. Here’s what the fans said:

Now we just need to wait for Dean Ambrose to return to WWE in 2027 🤞🏻 pic.twitter.com/nfDrzheiJk

Here comes the “omg Dean coming back to WWE” crowd…

1. AEW posted plenty of retro matches featuring Cody, AJ Styles, and even freaking Tyler Black on their channel.

2. Mox is at the top of AEW pretty much since its inception. Keep fantasizing. pic.twitter.com/qxA6M76EoQ

They said punk wouldn't come back to WWE he returned

They said Brock wouldn't return he returned

They said AJ lee wouldn't return she returned

Jon moxley aka dean Ambrose? You all keep saying he ain't returning to WWE but I actually think he will though pic.twitter.com/fY9yAmGfwI

I'm glad The Shield 🛡️ is Back for one final ride together! What if @JonMoxley came back to WWE as Dean Ambrose at Royal Rumble 2026 and trying to win Royal Rumble match and going to WrestleMania 42 to become World Champion again? That would be awesome! 😎👍🏻 https://t.co/CWEp2OOt3t

Nevertheless, as of now, it seems like a far-fetched dream that seems to be too good to be true, with Ambrose’s AEW contract binding him with the rival wrestling promotion brand. Thus, the WWE Universe has to keep yearning for the much-needed reunion, but we never know what the future holds and if Moxley returns before 2027.

Seth Rollins Addressed the Chances of The Shield’s Return

Despite the tension being at an all-time high, The Messiah finds himself cornered as The Vision decides to betray him. However, he does not expect his brother-in-arms, Ambrose, to return anytime soon. Appearing as a guest on WFAN, The Visionary discussed the real possibility of the faction getting back together. He said,

I mean, look, one of our guys is over in the other company. So he ain’t coming. And Roman Reigns and I are here for life. Look, our paths are gonna be intertwined. We’re gonna crisscross here and there until both of us are done and retired. So you never know. You never know what WrestleMania is going to look like. You never know what next month is going to look like.

However, Rollins did not extinguish the ray of hope for the fans, as he said that the reunion “could be anytime.” Since the world of professional wrestling is extremely unpredictable, there’s a faint possibility that Moxley has a change of heart and decides to give the fans what they want.
