Netflix Unveils Chilling First Look at Nightmares of Nature By Maya Hawke

Netflix is exploring its wildlife storytelling with Nightmares of Nature. The new documentary follows a new natural history-horror hybrid narrated by Maya Hawke. The show will deliver two seasons, each showcasing the blend of documentary storytelling with the eerie tone of a horror film.

As per the official synopsis from Netflix, season 1 will be,

Our three characters, a soon-to-be-mother mouse, a young bachelor raccoon, and a froglet who has seen terrible things, quickly discover how scary the woods truly are and find themselves in search of sanctuary. They stumble upon an old cabin in the woods, thinking it a safe haven, they soon discover their nightmares have really only just begun.

Meanwhile, the second season will intensify the horror,

For our three characters, a young opossum, a newly hatched iguana, and a feisty jumping spider, the nightmare of staying alive escalates fast when they discover an abandoned laboratory deep in the jungle. Lost in this unnatural labyrinth, with a new monster hiding behind every corner, they are in the struggle of their lives to get out before it is too late.

Each season has three 45-minute episodes, where viewers will get to visit animal survival stories through a perspective where zombie snails, bleeding trees, and vampire fish are part of the backdrop.

Sure, Netflix has dived into nature territory before, but Nightmares of Nature feels different. Unlike traditional wildlife series like Our Planet or Life on Our Planet, which focus mainly on the beauty of ecosystems, Maya Hawke’s project is more about fear, survival, and suspense. It shows the terrifying side of the animals- how they manage to survive daily.

Even if you compare You vs. Wild with Bear Grylls, Nightmares of Nature is altogether a more experimental and cinematic feature on animals. It takes the viewers through survival tactics, immersing them into an eerie narrative where creatures like mice, iguanas, raccoons, and others fight to survive in a supernatural environment. Though it’s not an education-based show like Chimp Empire, it surely aims to hook the audience with the drama and the horror.

Overall, the documentary mixes horror through animals, which will be new for the viewers and the genre. Moreover, considering Netflix’s success with edgy experiments, Nightmares of Nature might just become the streamer’s wildest take on natural history.

Nightmares of Nature season 1 will drop on September 30, 2025, on Netflix.
