Idris Elba “Couldn’t speak” After Watching Netflix’s Scariest Non-Horror Movie of 2025

By George Wilson 10/09/2025

Reflecting on how intense his new Netflix movie A House of Dynamite is, Idris Elba said he was completely speechless after watching the thriller. Why? Because the movie, directed by Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow, isn’t a typical horror film, but early viewers are calling it one of the scariest experiences of 2025.

Elba plays the US President, who must face a nightmare situation when a mysterious nuclear missile is launched, putting the world on the edge of destruction. In the movie, he stars alongside Rebecca Ferguson and leads a high-stakes operation full of tension, fear, and chaos. So naturally, when asked about his experience watching the movie for the first time, Elba told Collider that he couldn’t speak for seven minutes.

When I watched the film for the first time, it was a good seven minutes afterwards, and I didn’t say a word. I sat in that cinema, super quiet. I couldn’t speak. I just was like, ‘Wow, what on Earth?’

Now, Kathryn Bigelow’s thriller is set to hit Netflix on October 10, and if Idris Elba’s reaction is anything to go by, audiences are in for a nerve-wracking thrill ride.

The table contains basic details on A House of Dynamite:

Idris Elba Hopes A House of Dynamite Will Trigger Some Curiosity Among Viewers

While Idris Elba himself had a shocking reaction to A House of Dynamite, the actor told Gold Derby that the movie wasn’t made to just scare people. Instead, he wants it to make them think. The actor hopes that after watching the film, viewers will be curious enough to dig deeper into how real the situation could be.

The actor noted that while the story might be fiction, he believes it reflects how fragile our world truly is when it comes to nuclear power and politics. So naturally, Elba noted that he wants audiences, journalists, and even world leaders to talk about what the movie shows.

In his words, it’s like a “house of cards” where one wrong move could destroy everything, and nobody wins.

Curiosity. I want audiences to be like, hey, I need to look this up. I need to understand this a little bit. I want audiences within the media to talk about it and really examine it from a journalistic perspective as to how we got here, or why are we still here.

I want heads of states and that level to look at it and go, is this the right system? It’s a house of cards, and nobody wins. It is entertainment. It’s a film. And I’m an actor. But I do want this to trigger some reaction where we actually speak about this and perhaps reform some of our thinking around it.

Through his performance, Idris Elba hopes people will start asking questions about how such systems work and whether they need to change. Even though A House of Dynamite is purely for the sake of entertainment, Elba believes it can start real-world conversations. For him, movies are more than just stories, they can be a mirror for society.

Kathryn Bigelow Yet Again Explores the Intersection of the Military and Geopolitics

Well, there’s no one better than director Kathryn Bigelow who could give birth to such a thought-provoking thriller. After all, she has always loved making movies that feel real and grounded in world events. From the stresses of defusing explosives in Iraq in The Hurt Locker to the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty, she’s known for showing the tension, fear, and bravery that come with military and political life.

So, with A House of Dynamite, she returned to familiar ground, exploring how nuclear weapons and global power could collide in terrifying ways. Here she explores how politics and military decisions intertwine during a global crisis. She captures the chaos of command, the pressure of power, and the moral weight leaders face when one wrong choice could spark nuclear war. Throughout the film, she blends realism with intense human emotion.

Further, while speaking with The Associated Press, Bigelow said what drove her to this storyline. She explained how she has always been drawn to stories that start with a big question she wants to answer. For this film, it was about understanding how close humanity is to destroying itself with the very weapons it created.

After all, she lived through the Cold War era and has firsthand experience of remembering the fear of nuclear war.

I find myself at the intersection of art and information and journalism and, in this case, the military again and again and again. It always starts with a question I’m curious about. In order to find the answer, I have to do these movies. It’s a rather cumbersome way to get to it.

Now, with her new Netflix thriller, Bigelow thus hoped for the new generations to feel that same urgency through her storytelling. And, to make the film as real as possible, the director worked with Noah Oppenheim, a journalist and writer who researched actual military procedures. Together, they created a thrilling movie that blurs the line between entertainment and journalism, allowing people to viscerally feel the danger and the stakes.
