How Will Lucas Change in Ransom Canyon Season 2? Garrett Wareing Explains

Garrett Wareing is hinting at a major transformation for his character, Lucas Russell, in Ransom Canyon season 2. Season 1 left off with Lucas heartbroken and questioning his future after a rocky end to his romance with Lauren Brigman (Lizzy Greene).

In an interview with Deadline, Wareing teased a major shift in tone for his character in season 2 of the Stephen King adaptation:

We saw a lot of joy and lover-boy golden retriever energy within Lucas in the first season. Without giving too much away, I think we’re going to see a nice contrast for Lucas in Season 2.

After playing the hopeful, love-struck ranch hand, Wareing says Lucas’ next chapter will be more mature. The love triangle between Lucas, Lauren, and Reid Collins will continue to complicate things in Season 2.

What to Expect From Ransom Canyon Season 2?

Netflix officially renewed Ransom Canyon for a second season in June 2025, a show that many compared to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone. The show spent four weeks in the streamer’s Global top 10 list. It reached the Top 10 in 77 countries (via Tudum).

By the end of season 1, Lauren had broken things off with Lucas after suffering a shoulder injury that cost her a college scholarship. Although Lucas made a love confession on stage at Gracie’s Dance Hall, Lauren urged him not to stay behind for her. He’s torn between his feelings and a pile of unopened college acceptance letters.

Elsewhere, Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) and Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly) finally confessed their feelings, only for Quinn to leave for New York to save her struggling dance hall. The town was rocked by revelations, including the truth behind the death of Staten’s son and the sudden appearance of Yancy Grey’s secret wife, just as he prepared to marry Ellie Estevez.

Season 2 will pick up after these cliffhangers, likely with a time jump. In an Interview with TVLine, showrunner April Blair has hinted that if it were set in New York, it wouldn’t be the same show. Quinn’s return from New York will be the audience’s “reentry into Ransom Canyon.”

Season 2 will officially introduce Yancy Grey’s wife, a character teased in the final episode of Season 1. Actress Erica Dasher (known for Jane by Design) will portray the mysterious woman who shows up just as Yancy (Jack Schumacher) is preparing to marry Ellie (Marianly Tejada).

Returning for Season 2 are Josh Duhamel as Staten Kirkland and Minka Kelly as Quinn O’Grady. Lizzy Greene is returning as Lauren, Garrett Wareing as Lucas, and Andrew Liner as Reid. Casey W. Johnson, who plays Lucas’ brother Kit Russell, has been promoted to series regular after his character’s name was cleared in the death of Staten’s son (via Deadline).

Also returning are Marianly Tejada as Ellie Estevez, Jack Schumacher as Yancy Grey, and Justin Johnson Cortez as Officer Kai Flores. James Brolin, whose character Cap Fuller died in Season 1, is not expected to return.
