Sakura Haruno might be one of the main characters in Naruto, but over the years, fans have developed a negative reaction to her. While she is a powerful character in the series, there are plenty of fans who despise her to the core. In fact. Sakura has also created a slight divide between Masashi Kishimoto and his wife.
In an interview with Kishimoto published by Anime News Network in October 2015, the author revealed that putting Naruto and Hinata together instead of pairing the main character with Sakura almost caused chaos in his marriage.
Masashi Kishimoto Confesses How Sinking the Naruto x Sakura Ship Caused Marital Tension
In the interview, Masashi Kishimoto revealed that he had no idea that there would be such a huge controversy when he revealed who Naruto eventually marries. In the series, Hinata Hyuga is the primary love interest of the protagonist, but with Sakura being the female lead, many fans expected the two to end up together. Thus, Naruto ending up with Hinata came as a shock to plenty of fans.
Masashi Kishimoto also hilariously admitted:
I almost caused a rift in my own household too, because my wife was very upset also that Naruto didn’t get together with Sakura. In fact, she complained quite vehemently to me!
Naruto’s pairing with Hinata has always been a bit of a touchy subject for plenty of fans. Yet, it’s quite funny to know that the author had to face flak from his own wife due to his decision. Turns out, Kishimoto’s wife is a Naruto x Sakura supporter, and her husband sank her favorite ship with his own hands.
Even more hilarious was the fact that in order to calm down his wife, Kishimoto had to reassure her by stating that she was the model for Hinata. However, in the same interview, he confessed that his wife might have secretly realized that she wasn’t really the model for Hinata.
Why Kishimoto Chose Hinata Over Sakura For Naruto
The author has already made it clear why he chose Hinata over Sakura to pair with Naruto. Hinata has always watched Naruto persist from the shadows, from the very beginning of the series, and was the only one supporting and cheering the protagonist.
Even at times when the protagonist was unsuccessful or went through bad times, Hinata showed an understanding attitude and realized that Naruto would never give up. Of course, Sakura also did the same to some extent, but Hinata has been there from the very beginning.
According to Kishimoto, he would have felt bad for Hinata, who had been there for Naruto from the beginning of the story, if she had not ended up with him. In fact, even before Naruto was all-powerful and fully matured, she saw his potential.
