After previously calling Peacemaker Season 2 a prequel to Superman: Man of Tomorrow, James Gunn has now revealed just how closely the DC series and the movie are linked. During a watch-along for Season 2 episode Another Rick Up My Sleeve, Gunn responded to a fan question on Threads, saying,
As Ive said countless times, you can watch every project by itself of course (just like you can watch Peacemaker by itself or watch Superman without seeing Creature Commandos). But Man of Tomorrow and PMS2 are very very connected.
While Peacemaker Season 2 is integral to understanding the upcoming Superman sequel, Gunn assures that viewers can also enjoy each project independently.
What Is Superman: Man of Tomorrow About?
In September 2025, James Gunn announced a sequel to the 2025 DC movie, Superman, through an Instagram post with the caption reading, “Man of Tomorrow. In theatres July 9, 2027.”
The filmmaker and DC Studios head has been openly discussing his plans for a sequel and revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he has been working on a “Superman Saga.”
I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga.’ The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked-out treatment. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.
Man of Tomorrow is the latest addition to James Gunn’s DC Universe (DCU) lineup. And with the filmmaker describing the movie as a sequel to Peacemaker, the HBO Max series is now expected to lay the groundwork for the future of the DCU.
Speculation is also growing about potential cameos, including David Corenswet’s Superman in Peacemaker. John Cena made a brief cameo in the 2025 Superman movie.
Peacemaker Star Hints at Superman Cameo in Season 2
With several new DC characters from Superman, including Hawk Girl and Guy Gardner, having made an appearance in Peacemaker Season 2, anticipation has grown for a possible Superman cameo.
And the Peacemaker star Frank Grillo discussed the possibility of Superman’s involvement in an interview with Fortress of Solitude. “I do think there’s certainly bad blood between Rick Flag and Superman,” he said, talking about his character’s dynamic with the superhero.
He continued,
But I also agree they’re not always available to show up when they’re needed. But saying that … I don’t think you’ve seen more than five episodes? So, we can’t really say anything.
While Grillo didn’t explicitly confirm Superman’s appearance, he hinted that fans could be in for a surprise in the upcoming episodes of Peacemaker Season 2.
Season 2 has released 3 episodes so far. Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 4, Need I Say Door, is set to release this week on September 11, 2025.
