GRRM’s $100M Movie Project With Ron Perlman & Guillermo del Toro Will Further Delay The Winds of Winter

George R.R. Martin has dreams of seeing his 1982 vampire novel, Fevre Dream, come to life, an endeavor that sounds quite exciting, albeit another possible cause of delay for The Winds of Winter.

The author told Daniel Roman of Winter Is Coming that, if he had a budget as colossal as that of Game of Thrones, he would work on a movie adaptation with Ron Perlman in the lead and Guillermo del Toro at the helm.

I’ve had meetings with Guillermo Del Toro about Fevre Dream. He loves it, he says wants to do it…he said he wants to do it, but he doesn’t want to do it now… But eventually we would do that and I think Fevre Dream would be great. We wanna star Ron Perlman, we’ve even cast it! My friend Ron Perlman as [steamboat captain] Abner Marsh. Ron wants to do it. Everybody wants to do it, all we need is $100 million.

Martin’s Fevre Dream may have been a personal favorite of his, and vampire fantasy stories never go out of style. But, he’s already got so many projects on his plate, all while The Winds of Winter

is begging to be finished.

GRRM Wrote A Screenplay for Fevre Dream Amid The Winds of Winter Delay

Martin wrote the screenplay for the Fevre Dream movie back in the ‘90s, even revealing he had a deal with Disney several years ago. Obviously, it did not push through. It received renewed interest when HBO’s Game of Thrones happened, but despite gaining the attention of at least three directors, the project remained stuck in development hell.

Even with no luck, Martin remains hopeful that the movie will get off the ground. He is certain his work will be safe in del Toro’s hands—the screenplay he insisted on writing himself. Fans are familiar with the Mexican director’s filmography, and there’s no question that he will undoubtedly deliver another visual spectacle.

Since the script is already at hand, and Martin revealed they already have their cast lineup, it’s only a matter of time and money before they start filming. If this is the case, the writer will find himself wedged into multiple projects, leaving him with little time to write The Winds of Winter, the novel he has been struggling to finish since he began in 2011.

Fevre Dream Movie Could Happen Before Martin Completes ASOIAF Series

There are many possible reasons why Fevre Dream is taking too long to adapt for film. Del Toro’s schedule with his deal with Netflix and Martin’s commitment to several live-action projects all play a role in the delay.

Tonally, many fans believe it shares similarities with Interview with the Vampire, but since Martin has already cracked the screenplay, he definitely knows how to make his story work for television.

At this point, the plan for a Fevre Dream movie seems more likely to happen sooner than Martin announcing the release of The Winds of Winter. He’s reportedly stuck in the same progress he was in three years ago, and there’s no telling when he will be able to complete the series.
