Gintama Trolls Dragon Ball GT In New Spinoff

By George Johnson 10/11/2025

Dragon Ball GT often becomes the butt of jokes due to its divergence from the original storyline. The most recent person to make fun of it is none other than Gintama‘s notorious protagonist, Gintoki.

The Gintama franchise has received a brand new spinoff series based on Tomohito Osaki’s light novel, Gintama: Mr. Ginpachi’s Zany Class. This spinoff takes place in a school setting with Gintoki Sakata as the teacher and all the recurring characters as his rowdy bunch of students. The anime began airing on October 7, 2025.

Gintoki Compares the New Gintama Spinoff to Dragon Ball GT

Gintama: Mr. Ginpachi’s Zany Class‘ episode 1 is out, and from the very beginning, Gintoki can be seen taking a dig at how the anime is prolonging its tenure. In fact, Gintoki ended up making a Dragon Ball reference by calling the latest anime “Gintama GT.”

In the episode, Gintoki recalled how the light novel was actually developed from a few appendix pages of the original Gintama over 20 years ago. He even stated that to Gintama fundamentalists, this isn’t even Gintama anymore, it’s just a pirated copy.

Gintoki then goes on to say that he had warned the staff not to commit to the spinoff since the original anime had come to a good end. The anime then launches into a full-on Dragon Ball parody before stating:

It’s not Mr. Ginpachi up ahead, but the path of Gintama GT.

It turned out to be a reference to how Akira Toriyama did not want to continue Dragon Ball, but Toei Animation forced it. For many fans, GT is simply a way to milk the original franchise.

Gintama: Mr. Ginpachi’s Zany Class Begins With Another Cheeky Parody

Gintama is well known for parodying various anime. From Dragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, to even Doraemon, nothing has been spared by Hideaki Sorachi. Naturally, the latest spinoff anime is no different. Right from the start, the series goes into a long dialogue about how the spinoff anime came to be.

Since the anime isn’t a direct continuation from the original franchise, Gintoki compared it to Dragon Ball GT and even mentioned Akira Toriyama. Of course, Gintama has always been blatant with parodies, but parodying Dragon Ball within the first few minutes of the spinoff is not only hilarious but also expected.

Here is a table with some of the most hilarious parodies in Gintama
