Sony and Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Yotei is officially a hit. Released on October 2, 2025, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima has broken multiple sales records to become Japan’s best-selling PS5 title to date. And we’re not surprised in the least that it found success despite the pre-release controversy and boycott threats.

As of October 10, 2025, Ghost of Yotei not only topped Japan’s weekly sales but also surpassed 1.6 million copies sold worldwide, securing its place among PlayStation’s biggest first-party hits this generation. And it will only reach higher from here.

Ghost of Yotei’s Boycott Controversy Didn’t Stop Its Success

When Ghost of Yotei was first revealed, some fans were unhappy that Jin Sakai, the protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima, would not return. Sucker Punch’s decision to feature a new lead, Atsu, voiced by Erika Ishii, led to waves of social media outrage and even boycott threats.

Still, as we’ve seen time and again, that online backlash did little to affect the game’s real-world performance. Weeks before release, Yotei became the most pre-ordered game on the PlayStation Store across nearly every region, even topping Amazon charts in the UK.

Ghost of Yotei had the fifth biggest launch for a PS5 title in Japan yet.

It's the biggest launch for a first party PS title since Gran Turismo 7.

Following its October 2, 2025, release, Ghost of Yotei went on to debut at number one in Japan’s Famitsu sales charts, selling 120,196 physical copies during its opening week. To put that into perspective, this made it the fifth-largest PS5 launch in Japan’s history, surpassing titles like Armored Core VI and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

And the players who actually played the game have praised the sequel’s improvement in combat, visual presentation, and its new and emotionally filled story. Atsu’s revenge-driven arc, combined with near-instant load times, polished combat, and stunning PS5 visuals, makes the game a strong contender for Game of the Year 2025.

Sucker Punch’s Sequel Has Already Sold More Than 1.6 Million Copies

According to new data from Alinea Analytics (October 9, 2025), Ghost of Yotei has already surpassed 1.6 million copies sold directly to consumers, with over two million copies sold-in to retailers. That figure makes it PlayStation’s strongest PS5 first-party launch since Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

This means that the title has generated nearly $100 million in revenue within its first week. It’s also worth noting that digital sales account for roughly 77% of total units, which isn’t a surprise given Sony’s shift toward digital-first publishing.

While Ghost of Yotei is selling slower than Ghost of Tsushima, which sold 2.4 million copies in its first three days, the report notes that the market conditions are vastly different. The first game launched during the global pandemic and at a time when the PS4’s install base exceeded 110 million, compared to the PS5’s 80 million today.

Given those factors, the sequel has performed outstandingly so far, especially considering its modest $60 million development budget, which was reportedly recouped just one day after launch.

In just one week, Ghost of Yotei has proven that Sucker Punch’s samurai saga is still one of PlayStation’s most powerful and profitable franchises. And we can’t disagree. What about you? How has your experience with Ghost of Yotei been?
