By Steven Williams 10/15/2025

After a long run of boycott drama around Ghost of Yotei, it seemingly didn’t work out in the end. As a matter of fact, it saw the second biggest launch after Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which also faced some controversy. This success story shows that if a game is good, then there’s no chance it will fail in any way possible.

NEWS: Ghost of Yōtei is the biggest Sony launch since Spider-Man 2 back in October 2023, in Europe, box game sales🚀

It’s gotten common for PlayStation to face such events, because even when The Last of Us Part 2 faced similar controversy, it still sold like hot cakes. So, are boycotts from gamers merely becoming a gimmick to showcase different opinions? That seems to be the case.

How Did Ghost of Yotei Dodge the Boycott Bullet?

A part of Ghost of Yotei‘s success goes to Ghost of Tsushima, as players had good faith towards Sucker Punch Productions. However, Sucker Punch didn’t rely on their prior reputation, as they brought various positive changes.

Without a doubt, Ghost of Yotei is one of the most visually attractive games players can get their hands on. Not to mention, the gameplay is better than before, thanks to all the disarming features and different weapons instead of stances to break opponents.

Additionally, Sucker Punch continues the trend of delivering a great story with GoY. While Ghost of Tsushima was all about Jin Sakai abandoning the way of the Samurai to protect his land from invaders, Atsu from Ghost of Yotei tells a tale of vengeance against her fallen family.

The story isn’t as noble as the first game, but it sure packs a punch till the end. Moreover, the antagonists were interesting as well, which made the latest game from Sucker Punch unique.

Sucker Punch Productions Technically Has Zero Failures

Sucker Punch Productions probably has one of the best success stories, and it dates back beyond Infamous. Back in 1999, the studio first showcased Rocket, which showcased how dedicated the team was towards making video games; however, the real breakthrough came after.

The studio took their chances on creating something similar to Spyro, and then came the first Sly Cooper title. Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus got around a million sales, which was enough to impress Sony, and they continued to release multiple games under the same franchise.

However, as the PlayStation 3 era barged in, linear games were slowly becoming obsolete. With successes like Uncharted, Sucker Punch had to bring a new idea that would do them justice. If you haven’t guessed already, it was the Infamous series. Every release under the franchise was a smash hit, and people thought it would continue.

Surprisingly, the studio didn’t continue the trend. Instead, they took risks and created Ghost of Tsushima, which surpassed all expectations, and now we have a sequel that is also successful. In a way, Sucker Punch Productions has a long-standing history of creating games that break boundaries.
