Gachiakuta Episode 9 Review: A Bittersweet Episode Focusing on Artistic Freedom and Joy

Gachiakuta episode 9 was one that celebrated the anime’s central theme of freedom. It took a moment aside to detach from the ever-present violence and vengeance in the series to show a city full of artists.

While the introduction of Canvas Town and Remlin was exciting, it also highlighted the perils of survival. Most people are killed by trash from the Sphere, and others succumb to the pollution everywhere. Not wearing proper masks is a death sentence.

Gachiakuta Episode 9 Doubled Down on the Spirit of Freedom

Gachiakuta has always been about freedom, whether it is freedom from oppression, freedom from social inequality, or artistic freedom. Episode 9 focuses on this last theme of freedom, that is, the freedom to express oneself. Whether it is the Vital Instruments or the graffiti on the walls of cities, the expression of oneself has always taken center stage in anime.

In episode 9, the audience is introduced to The City of Graffity, Canvas Town. Here, people are free to do graffiti all over the walls, and that is how they express themselves. Each and every wall in the city is decorated with various types of graffiti, making it a truly beautiful place. In fact, the Vital Instrument of the city’s protector, Gob, is also a pen.

Even the Cleaners are aware of the free-spirited natures of these artists. They understand that Gob only drops by when he wishes to, and Corvus gives him a free rein. Additionally, even the resident artist of the Cleaners, who designs their uniforms and Full Faces, is never rushed about his job. The others recognize that rushing him only creates unsatisfactory work.

A Reinvigorating Episode Without Any Plot Progress

Gachiakuta episode 9 was energetic while also delivering some bittersweet moments. Gob might have passed away, but his successor is even more free-willed than him and her power seems to be immense. The theme song that matched her celebration was addictive and adrenaline-pumping.

At the same time, the episode did not really offer any real progression to the plot. The Cleaners are still introducing Rudo to the various cities on the ground. Canvas Town is a city of freedom and joy, and the episode also took the freedom of only providing something that is enjoyable.

The Watchman Series remains unexplored in episode 9, and the Raiders do not make a second appearance either. None of the main characters makes any significant progress in terms of their skill. It looks like the episode only built up to what might happen later. Remlin will probably become an important character in the anime, and this episode only showed a bit of her origin.
