Fast & Furious 11: Can These 3 Major Setbacks Delay Dwayne Johnson’s Movie Until 2027?

By Andrew Jones 10/05/2025

The last movie of the iconic Fast & Furious franchise was released all the way back in 2023 with Fast X. Since then, the cliffhanger ending of the movie has left the fans demanding the next part of the series be released soon. But via new reports from The Wall Street Journal, it seems like the film is unlikely to be released anytime soon.

From budget constraints to problems regarding the setting and theme of the script, here are the three major reasons why the Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson starrer won’t be seeing the light of day, probably till 2027.

No Official Release Date of Fast & Furious 11 in Sight

Despite the lead star Vin Diesel’s previous comments about the release of Fast & Furious 11 being in the first half of 2025, fans were disappointed that the potential release window was moved back to 2026. But now, as per reports, it’s being suggested that the release window has now been pushed even further back to 2027.

This is a big point of concern for the stars that are associated with the project, as any stage of its production has yet to begin. Universal Studios having no official release dates, just a possible timeline, means that even after 2 years, no development has been made.

Fast & Furious 11 Budget Constraints Hold Up Production

With a budget of $340 million and a revenue of $714 million (via The Numbers), the last movie was barely able to turn a profit, which was way less than what Universal felt was acceptable for one of its biggest moneymakers. Therefore, the production company is now compelling the production to be limited to a budget of $200 million (via Wall Street Journal).

The last film’s budget went way overboard due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the strikes from the Writers’ Guild and other factors. Therefore, with meager profits to show for itself, the next film is being limited to the budget mentioned above.

At the same time, with almost none of the stars yet contacted for their appearances in the next film also raises concern in the fandom about the film’s release in the future.

Contentions Over the Fast & Furious 11 Script Slows Down Progress

Lastly, probably the biggest point of concern about the production of the film is the script. So far, there hasn’t been a concrete script for the story of Fast & Furious 11, which has been holding the entire production process back.

Even Jason Momoa, who plays the antagonist Dante Reyes in the franchise, is begging for a script to be handed to him with no luck. Fortunately, Diesel has made his demands for the next film clear, which include a return to the franchise’s street-racing roots and to the roads of Los Angeles, where it all began.

But in tandem with the budget restraints that are being applied to the project, the high labour costs of working in the California city become extremely challenging.

Here’s a table that gives more information about Fast X.
