Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy appeared in a recent headline in connection with Charlie Kirk’s memorial. A headline from the site Tinseltown Tales read, “Cillian Murphy Responds to Criticism Over Arizona Memorial Tribute.” The article went on to suggest that the Oppenheimer star faced backlash over not publicly delivering a tribute to Kirk at his memorial.
It even included an alleged response from Murphy over the backlash. The article apparently quoted Murphy saying, “I believe in honoring people in my own way. Respect isn’t always about being on a stage. It’s about living by the principles of peace and understanding every day.”
None of this is true. Kirk’s memorial saw a large turnout, but Murphy wasn’t the only one who did not attend his funeral or comment on the political conservative activist. There is no reason for fans to attack Murphy over this, and he certainly didn’t issue a statement in response. The news seemed to be completely fabricated.
What Are Cillian Murphy’s Political Beliefs?
Cillian Murphy isn’t too vocal about his politics on public platforms. But we did see instances of Murphy expressing his political views. His public expression of his beliefs has a subtle approach. For instance, his Oscar acceptance speech included the line, “We’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world—I would really like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere” (via Vanity Fair).
Murphy is very much privy to the politics of the world and his country, Ireland. A few of his underrated films actually tackled the Irish Civil War and the human experiences of the war. Murphy moved back to Dublin after leaving London amid the Brexit controversy. He told British GQ at the time:
We are seeing an extreme polarisation in certain parts of the world that is frightening. I think all politicians are terrible and I think being terrible is part of being a politician.
Murphy had expressed his opinions on multiple issues. When the former Vita Cortex workers organized a sit-in at their plant, Murphy congratulated them, saying they were “highlighting [what] is hugely important to us all as a nation” (via Irish Independent). He was also a supporter of the 2018 Irish referendum seeking the repeal of the Eighth Amendment, which restricted access to abortions.
More recently, the Peaky Blinders star was among the celebrities who participated in a video and campaign to call for a ceasefire in Gaza (via CNN). This campaign came ahead of the Together For Palestine benefit concert in London in September 2025.
