Every Harry Potter Villain, Ranked Worst to Best

By Thomas Martinez 10/16/2025

Across seven magical books and eight films, the Harry Potter saga gave us some of the most unforgettable villains ever. From dark wizards to sneaky professors and terrifying creatures, these characters made the magical world both exciting and scary. And among them, some villains were pure evil, while others had complex reasons behind their actions.

Anyway, whether these villains wanted power, revenge, or simply chaos, each one added a special spark to the story. But then again, not all villains were created equal; some were far more dangerous and memorable than others. So, let’s look at every Harry Potter villain, ranked from terrifying to pure evil, across J.K. Rowling’s seven iconic books.

The table contains details on the Harry Potter films:

15. Nagini

Nagini, although terrifying, happens to rank low on our list merely because of her backstory and the things she did. Like, she was a maledictus who lost her human conscience after turning into a snake for eternity. Plus, she had no one to call her own, except for Lord Voldemort, who knew Parseltongue.

So naturally, she became Voldemort’s closest companion and one of his Horcruxes. Thereafter, she did attack and kill a few, including poor Severus Snape, on Voldemort’s orders. But it’s only because she was under a blood curse and, like we said, had no conscience of her own. Basically, she wasn’t evil by choice but by control.

please bear in mind that Gryffindor are not the good guys.

Also the wizarding community are responsible for a Nagini becoming Nagini.

Still, her actions caused great pain. As a loyal servant to the Dark Lord, Nagini helped him stay alive and made sure no one stood in his way. That loyalty, though forced, made her a deadly force.

14. The Dementors

These dark, hooded creatures are literally some of the scariest things in the Harry Potter world. Plus, they don’t kill with spells; they simply destroy happiness itself. These dark, ghostly beings are especially known to guard Azkaban and feed on people’s happiest memories, leaving them cold and hopeless.

So yes, they are bloody terrifying. They represent depression and fear in their darkest forms and even attacked Harry on multiple occasions. But, given how they have literally no motive behind their actions, other than their hunger for misery, the Dementors remain the worst villains in the magical saga.

You can repel them using Expecto Patronum. But yes, that doesn’t negate the fact that their existence alone spreads terror, making them unforgettable villains of the Wizarding World.

13. Quirinus Quirrell

No one expected a stuttering, nervous, and timid Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher to turn out to be a villain in disguise. But Professor Quirrell proved us all wrong and turned out to be one of Voldemort’s earliest followers. In Sorcerer’s Stone, he secretly worked with the Dark Lord, even letting him live on the back of his head!

That’s next-level creepy. Adding to it, Quirrell even tried to steal the Philosopher’s Stone to give Voldemort back his body and power. He was willing to kill Harry, a student, to do it. In fact, on multiple occasions, he even jinxed Harry, trying to remove him from his way. Yet, we would say, Quirrell wasn’t the strongest villain.

Because while he tried his best, Quirrell also lost it all to the genius and bravery of an 11-year-old. So, while Quirrell’s cowardice and greed turned him from teacher to servant of darkness, he remained a mere example of how dark ambition could twist people.

12. Severus Snape

Severus Snape simply happens to be one of the most complex villains in the entire series. For most of the story, he seemed like the worst kind of teacher, cruel, sarcastic, and unfair. He bullied Harry and several other students, taking joy in their fear. Plus, he even worked for Voldemort and later killed Dumbledore!

But Snape’s story is complicated. Deep down, he was motivated by love for Lily Potter, Harry’s mother. So, everything he did after her death, good and bad, came from that love. He later turned out to be a double agent who simply worked to protect Harry in secret, even though Snape also made life miserable for him.

So, while Snape’s coldness and pride made him hard to like, his hidden heroism that was revealed at the end made fans rethink what “villain” truly means in the Wizarding World.

11. The Dursleys

Okay, yes, the Dursleys weren’t dark wizards or monsters, but they were this family of really mean, selfish people, who made life insufferable for Harry. But that’s what makes them so realistic as villains. Vernon, Petunia, and Dudley treated Harry like dirt, forcing him to live in a cupboard and denying him love.

They were cruel because he was different, because he had magic. So, throughout the saga, they represented everyday evil, the kind that hides behind normal lives. Their actions left emotional scars that shaped Harry’s early years. And while they never used spells or wands, their constant bullying and neglect made them some of the most despised characters.

The Dursleys reminded us that cruelty doesn’t always come with dark robes, power, or blood status; it can live next door.

10. Gilderoy Lockhart

Gilderoy Lockhart wasn’t your typical villain; he didn’t use dark magic to hurt people on purpose. But what he did instead was use charm, lies, and fame as his weapons. As the flashy professor in Chamber of Secrets, he took credit for other wizards’ achievements, then erased their memories to keep his lies hidden.

That’s pure selfishness. Lockhart cared only about attention, money, and his own image, and never about truth or people. His greed destroyed multiple lives and even led to his own downfall when a spell backfired and wiped his own memory clean. So, while he initially seemed funny and harmless, he eventually turned out to be a con.

His fake heroism not only hurt many but also put several Hogwarts students in danger. Lockhart basically taught us that vanity and deceit can be just as dangerous as dark magic.

9. Barty Crouch Jr.

Here onwards, the list is gonna get dark. Because there ain’t no villain as terrifying as Voldemort’s loyal followers. And Barty Crouch Jr. turned out to be one of Voldemort’s most devoted Death Eaters. He was cruel, clever, and completely insane, just for fun. Quite literally, he was driven by his psychotic mind and loyalty towards the bad guy.

So much so that after escaping from Azkaban, he disguised himself as Professor Moody in Goblet of Fire using Polyjuice Potion, and later tricked everyone at Hogwarts, including Dumbledore! He also manipulated the Triwizard Tournament so as to orchestrate Voldemort’s return and Harry’s confrontation with the Dark Lord.

Even his father couldn’t control him, which says a lot. Crouch Jr. was proof that pure loyalty to evil can destroy everything around you, even your own family. He lived and breathed chaos until his final moment.

8. Lucius Malfoy

Hands down, Lucius Malfoy has to be one of the meanest characters in the Harry Potter series. This man wasn’t just rich and powerful; he was dangerous and a menace. As one of Voldemort’s oldest supporters, he believed in pure-blood supremacy. And he later used his money and influence to spread fear and control people.

Lucius was responsible for slipping Tom Riddle’s diary into Ginny Weasley’s bag, which almost led to her death. He also tortured and intimidated others during both Wizarding Wars, and even made life miserable for Dobby, his family’s loyal serving elf. But also, deep down, Lucius was a coward who despised bravery.

Meanwhile, he may not have killed anyone, but his bad parenting led Draco to become an insufferable brat. Overall, Lucius Malfoy’s arrogance and cruelty caused suffering for years, but his weakness in the end showed how fear rules even the proudest villains.

7. Antonin Dolohov

Well, Antonin Dolohov may not be a household name among moviegoers, but among Potterheads, he was one of the most dangerous Death Eaters. Fighting in both Wizarding Wars, Dolohov was responsible for the deaths of many brave witches and wizards, including Molly’s brothers and even Remus Lupin.

Plus, he also seriously injured Hermione during the battle in the Department of Mysteries. So, this one was simply cruel, powerful, and loyal to Voldemort until the end. And unlike the others, he didn’t have a tragic backstory or inner struggle; he simply enjoyed spreading pain. His evil was straightforward and brutal, making him a pure menace.

This Death Eater fought for blood purity and for Voldemort’s dream of domination. And so at the end, even though Dolohov may not have stood out much, his cruelty made him a deadly soldier of the Dark Lord, and one of the most ruthless and feared villains.

6. Fenrir Greyback

While Lupin was one of the most beloved characters despite being a werewolf, Fenrir Greyback turned out to be quite the opposite. He literally made us fear werewolves in the Harry Potter saga, over Dementors and Basilisks. If that doesn’t make him one of the most terrifying villains, then what will?

This creepy man literally enjoyed hurting people, especially children and young girls. A werewolf by nature, Fenrir turned his curse into a weapon. So, instead of hiding from it, he attacked whenever he could, even when it wasn’t a full moon. Plus, he was the reason behind Lupin’s lycanthropy in the first place.

Greyback also attacked Bill Weasley and even killed Lavender Brown during the Battle of Hogwarts. His hunger for blood and his pride in being a monster made him worse than many Death Eaters. And unlike others, he didn’t need orders; he wanted to cause pain. Greyback’s cruelty came straight from the heart.

5. Peter Pettigrew

Meet the Judas of Harry Potter—Peter Pettigrew, aka Wormtail, who was once a friend to James, Lily, and Sirius, but later betrayed them all. His cowardice led him to reveal the Potters’ location to Voldemort, which caused their deaths and set the entire story in motion. He even faked his own death and let Sirius take the blame.

So, he not only killed people as Voldemort’s loyal servant, but also ruined innocent lives through his betrayal. Not to mention, he was metaphorically and literally a rat. Later on, he even sacrificed his own hand to help Voldemort return to power, and even killed Cedric Diggory on command.

However, Peter wasn’t powerful or brave; he was desperate to survive. That’s what makes him so pathetic and evil. He always chose safety over loyalty, even when it destroyed his friends. In the end, his weak heart cost him everything, proving betrayal is the worst kind of evil.

4. Draco Malfoy

No matter how much we blame Lucius Malfoy for his bad parenting, Draco Malfoy grew up spoiled and full of pride because he had no remorse or empathy. As a kid, he may have insulted others, bullied Harry and Hermione because he knew nothing better. But then, even as an adult, he chose to idolize his powerful, pure-blood father and dreamed of becoming like him.

Well, it turns out he did become like Lucius Malfoy to some extent. Because much like his father, even Draco’s arrogance was a shield for his fear and cowardice. When Voldemort forced him to kill Dumbledore, Draco couldn’t do it. He realized evil wasn’t as glamorous as he had been taught. Draco eventually found redemption, but remained a purely evil character in the story.

Throughout the series, Draco represented how hate can be learned and unlearned. And eventually, his journey from a bully to a reluctant fighter made him one of the most complex, relatable, and human “villains” in the story.

3. Lord Voldemort

Sorry for placing Lord Voldemort in third place as one of the most menacing villains in the Harry Potter saga, but the ones above him are just beyond terrifying. So yes, Voldemort, born Tom Riddle, happens to be the purest form of evil in the Wizarding World. He killed without remorse, tortured for fun, and destroyed anyone who stood in his way.

Obsessed with power and immortality, he even split his soul into seven pieces by committing murder after murder, without stopping for once. Why? Because he saw empathy and love as weakness and ruled through fear. Voldemort’s evil wasn’t just about violence; it was about control, pride, and a complete lack of humanity.

He turned followers into slaves and enemies into corpses. So naturally, what makes him pure evil is that he didn’t need a reason; he simply wanted to dominate and live forever. And that’s what made him the closest thing to death, in a world full of magic.

2. Bellatrix Lestrange

Well, Voldemort’s most loyal follower turned out to be more evil than he was. Bellatrix Lestrange was a literal psychotic woman who just loved being evil. Her madness was her strength, and her loyalty to Voldemort was twisted into obsession. So much so that she tortured Hermione, murdered Sirius Black, and destroyed lives for fun.

Whether in her appearance or in her actions, this woman literally kept fans awake at night. Because she stopped at nothing. Whether torturing Neville’s parents or killing people, Bellatrix did it all while laughing, as if she found joy in others’ suffering. She didn’t care about power or politics; all she cared about was chaos and blood.

So, considering how her cruelty came from passion, not purpose, it made her a true villain. In fact, other Death Eaters feared her because she had no limits. Bellatrix’s evil was wild, unpredictable, and deeply personal.

1. Dolores Umbridge

Finally, we can all unanimously agree on this ranking because Dolores Umbridge is not only the most hated Harry Potter character, but also the definition of pure evil hiding behind politeness. Maxed out in pink (like flamingos puked on her), this shrewd woman smiled sweetly and then made students carve words into their own skin.

She didn’t need dark spells to spread her terror. Umbridge just used rules, power, and cruelty disguised as “discipline” to establish her dominance. And unlike Voldemort, who at least knew he was evil, this woman genuinely believed she was doing the right thing. That’s what made her so horrifying. She loved control and hated anyone who questioned her authority.

Yes, she never killed anyone, but her torture was limitless. From firing beloved teachers like Trelawney and Hagrid, to silencing truth at Hogwarts, Umbridge was too proud, manipulative, and heartless, and hid her sadism behind Ministry rules. Every “hem-hem” from her made our blood boil.

So, Dolores Umbridge wasn’t a villain you feared; she was one you despised, and that’s far more powerful. She proved that everyday evil can be the scariest kind of all.
