Is Triple H going to disappoint the fans once again? For quite some time, it has been teased that Edge will be the final opponent of John Cena. However, some fans have taken matters into their own hands and speculated who could be The GOAT squaring off against for the final time in December’s SNME. All fingers are raised towards one name, Gunther.

A wrestling enthusiast cut to the chase and took to X, sharing their opinion on how The Ring General vs. The Last Real Champion is already pre-written. Check out the tweet below:

I fully expect John Cena’s final match to be against GUNTHER.

The story writes itself:

-They’ve never faced each other
-GUNTHER would give him an incredible send off
-Cena would be another legend GUNTHER retires, adding to his legacy pic.twitter.com/weIBcVQS0q

The rumor of the former IC Champion circulated on the internet back in August, and it was something that fans were looking forward to. However, with The Rated R Superstar currently being in the picture, it ruins it. After all, fans would love to see Cena lock horns with the rival that put him on the map.

Gunther Has Dropped a Major Condition to Wrestle John Cena

There’s no denying that Gunther is one of the most talented wrestlers of this generation and is the best heel in the current locker room. Hence, the idea of him facing John Cena would be another cornerstone in the history of the wrestling business. All things considered, The Ring General is the man who retired Bill Goldberg.

Interestingly, that won’t be easy because the former World Heavyweight Champion has one non-negotiable demand to square off against The Cenation Leader. During an exclusive interview with The Masked Man Show, Gunther discussed the dream confrontation and what WWE needs to do to make the match happen. He said,

I think it will be a very exciting match up. I would love the scenario of like me being me and the struggling, pure babyface John Cena.

With that being said, the idea looks feasible, as Cena turned babyface before the 2025 SummerSlam, calling out The Rock and his accomplice, Travis Scott, for ruining his final year in WWE. This has kept the fans on their toes because the condition is being met.

At the same time, after Wrestlepalooza’s horrendous booking, The Chaingang Soldier has taken matters into his own hands, booking matches for himself. Hence, it will be intriguing to see if Gunther could be his last opponent in WWE.

Edge or Gunther: Who Deserves to Be John Cena’s Final Opponent?

With John Cena having limited appearances in WWE, the fans are more curious than ever to learn who will be the two names that will give a sendoff to the WWE veteran. The idea of Gunther being Cena’s last potential opponent is indeed an interesting choice when talking from a business perspective.

The former World Heavyweight Champion is a great choice to be Cena’s final opponent, as he is one of the hottest superstars in the modern locker room. Additionally, he is the perfect villain of WWE, who carries every title with great honor, adding respect to the championship. However, after SummerSlam, he has been away due to an injury that he suffered against CM Punk.

A match against the 17-time WWE Champion will give him the perfect push that would once again make him a conversation topic. Furthermore, Gunther is an immensely talented superstar who will be the future of WWE and is always the top name for a major storyline featuring a big name.

On the other hand, a match with Edge will be a tale for the generations, where a new generation of wrestling fans will witness what these two titans were in their prime in the Ruthless Aggression Era. Their feud for the WWE Championship was filled with personal insults and epic promos.

Each week, Cena would flaunt his promo skills, delivering epic insults to Edge and Lita. Though this time there will be no title on the line, it will still be memorable to watch because it will evoke thousands of memories. To think how The GOAT’s biggest rival is present in his final moments with the company, sending him off with one last match would surely be a wrestling classic.

Hence, according to us, Edge will be a better candidate for John Cena’s final match in WWE. Triple H’s recent bookings have tainted Cena’s reputation as an entertainer, forcing him to make a public statement. Thus, he should choose Adam Copeland over Gunther to remind fans what the Peacemaker actor’s WWE legacy is all about.

Even though choosing John Cena’s final opponent between Edge and Gunther is subjective, who do you think should face him in December? Let us know in the comments below!
