Drew McIntyre has been one of the most dominant performers inside the ring. He has been a representative of Scotland in the company and in professional wrestling in general. McIntyre is accredited as the first-ever and the only British WWE Champion.
However, McIntyre is not only a Scottish native but also an American. According to a report from PWInsider Elite, McIntyre became a naturalized American citizen during his time off after WrestleMania 39 in 2023. He currently holds dual citizenship, as a proud Scot and an American. Despite living and working in the US for some time now, his admiration for Scottish heritage is something fundamentally enshrined in him.
Drew McIntyre’s Family Life: All You Need to Know About His Wife, Children, and Parents
Drew McIntyre was born to Andrew Galloway Sr. and Angela Anne Galloway. Both of his parents were supportive of McIntyre’s wrestling ambitions.
His mother particularly had an immense impact on his life. During an interview with the BBC, the Scottish Giant described her as his biggest fan. Highlighting the importance of his mother in his life, McIntyre further shared:
If I’ve got a superhero for a mum this wrestling dream’s easy.
Additionally, his mother was diagnosed with a rare brain condition, cerebellar ataxia, in her 20s, which caused a progressive loss of coordination. She was told to never have children, but she had Drew and his brother.
While she saw McIntyre’s early struggles and rise as a professional wrestler, she could not see him established as a prominent WWE superstar since she unfortunately passed away in 2012 from cancer at the age of 51. The Scottish Giant was previously married to Taryn Terrell in 2010, but the couple did not last for long and decided to part ways in 2012.
After her mother’s demise, McIntyre was evidently shattered. It was at that crucial time that he met his current wife, Kaitlyn Frohnapfel, a physician whom he met in 2013 at a bar in Tampa, Florida, and married in December 2016.
Frohnapfel, who is originally from West Virginia, competed on the track and field team at Largo High School in Florida, where she set records in the 4×400 relay and the 400-meter dash. She studied biology at South Florida University after high school.
Frohnapfel and McIntyre lived in Florida together for over 10 years before they moved to Nashville. During a July 2022 interview with Fightful, McIntyre revealed fellow WWE star Sheamus encouraged the couple to move to Nashville, stating that the natural setting there is similar to Scotland or Ireland.
Furthermore, McIntyre credits his wife for being a supportive partner and helping him on his way to becoming a prominent WWE superstar. In an interview with The Telegraph in April 2021, McIntyre shared:
Without Kaitlyn, there is no Drew McIntyre, world champion.
Thus, Drew McIntyre’s family has played an integral role in his professional wrestling career, becoming the supportive backing he needed during his career.
Drew McIntyre Has Been a Stern Advocate of Scottish Nationalism
Drew McIntyre lives and breathes Scotland throughout. The Scottish Warrior has been an advocate of Scottish pride and Nationalism and has never shied away from his ethnic identity. The most evident expression of the love he has for Scotland came when the Scottish National team defeated Serbia to qualify for the Euros 2020.
In celebration of his victory and Scotland’s triumph over Serbia, Drew McIntyre shouted the iconic words, “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie” during his title-winning match against Randy Orton. The catchy lyrics became a symbol of pride and momentum, fueling both his performance in the ring and the spirit of the nation.
These words refer to the 70s track from Baccara, which the Scottish National team sang in celebration upon qualifying for the Euros back then. Additionally, there are speculations that McIntyre voted Yes during the 2014 Scottish referendum, but no confirmation has been made yet.
Thus, despite being an American citizen, Drew McIntyre’s love and admiration for Scotland remain intact. What remains to be seen is what plans the WWE creative heads have in the future for a talent of his caliber and capabilities.
