Anne Hathaway once wanted to be friends with Meghan Markle. She had expressed this desire around the time when news came out that Meghan was going through Royal training with the queen. It almost reminded us (and Meghan) of Hathaway’s movie The Princess Diaries.
While we didn’t find where The Dark Knight Rises actress made her desire known publicly first, we found this 2018 clip where she was asked about the same during an Access Hollywood interview. The reporter asked whether Meghan had responded to Hathaway about being friends, to which she gracefully answered:
No, I think she’s a little preoccupied at the moment. I think she might have a couple of other things going on.
Yes, the Duchess of Sussex was very busy at the time. The interview came out just weeks after Meghan and Prince Harry got married. Hathaway’s interview happened at the premiere of the ensemble movie, Ocean’s 8, where she appeared alongside Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Rihanna, and others.
However, Hathaway never updated us on whether she actually became friends with the Suits actress. Fans got to see them together when they both appeared at the Paris Fashion Week recently. They were seated near each other at the Balenciaga Spring/Summer 2026 show.
Meghan Markle Compared Learning Royal Protocol to Anne Hathaway’s Movie
Meghan Markle is well aware of Anne Hathaway’s famous movie, The Princess Diaries, and how it was brought up when she reportedly underwent royal training. However, she confirmed that joining the royal family wasn’t anything like we see in Genovia.
During her Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan, she claimed that there were no classes on how to follow the protocols. She shared (via Yahoo!):
Joining this family, I knew that there was a protocol for how things were done. Do you remember that old movie The Princess Diaries with Anne Hathaway? There’s no class [where] some person goes, ‘Sit like this, cross your legs like this, use this fork, don’t do this, curtsy then, wear this kind of hat.’
She further shared that she needed to learn a lot by herself. In Hathaway’s movie, her character finds out that she is the heir to the throne of Genovia. In one of the scenes, she gets instructed by her grandmother on how to wave at the crowds, walk in public, and cross her legs.
Meghan shared in another interview with The Cut that instructions similar to that in the movie “would’ve been really helpful” (via Us Weekly). She added, “That would’ve been a very key tutorial to have had in advance of all this.”
Meghan Markle and Anne Hathaway Were the Highlights of Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer 2026 Show
Meghan Markle’s appearance at the Paris Fashion Week to attend Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer 2026 show caused quite a stir. It was her first appearance in Europe in nearly three years and her first appearance in the Paris fashion calendar in over a decade.
She was dressed in all white to support Pierpaolo Piccioli, the new creative director of Balenciaga. She paired a sharply tailored blazer with wide-leg trousers. Her blazer featured cape-style shoulders. This outfit came from the house’s new collection. Later in the evening, she was spotted in an all-black Balenciaga dress at the front row of the show.
A few seats away from Meghan, Anne Hathaway made her presence known at the show with an oversized graphic t-shirt. Interestingly, the t-shirt extended into a floor-sweeping train that moved elegantly behind her. She completed the look with black leather opera gloves and wide black sunglasses.
