Ahead of the vital mixed tag team clash against Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins, AJ Lee has been caught in controversy once again. Former WWE superstar Kevin Nash has criticized Lee for her remarkable promo in Milwaukee and raised questions over her mental health struggles. During an interaction with Sean Oliver on the ‘Kliq This’ podcast, the legendary wrestler shared:
Sometimes, the closer you can make it to reality, the better it is. Like, especially if you’ve gone for like 10 years and you may not be familiar with the character that was there 10 years before that and they go on a rampage during a promo and they say and say while they were off they went and got like therapy and mental health and took care of their mental health and then people started chanting therapy and then you realise that she didn’t go take mental health and this is a wrestling angle.
The remarks from Kevin Nash pose a question on the credibility of AJ Lee’s performance in Milwaukee on the September 8, 2025, edition of Monday Night RAW (via WWE).
Why Is Kevin Nash Upset About ‘Therapy’ Chants in Milwaukee?
The remarks from AJ Lee and the subsequent chants from the crowd in Milwaukee would’ve been concerning for Kevin Nash because of his personal physical and mental health struggles.
Kevin Nash had undergone several injuries during the course of his career and beyond. One of the most striking physical discomforts he suffered was due to two quad injuries he sustained during the course of his career.
The first incident happened in July 2002 on an episode of Monday Night RAW, which became a widely known wrestling meme. The second tear happened years later, further worsening the already existing issue.
But it was the death of his son Tristen in 2022 that really took a toll on his state physically and mentally. The mental state he was in can be assessed from the fact that during a separate episode of the ‘Kliq This’, Nash shared:
Time flies when you got a gun in your mouth. I mean, time flies when you’re having fun.
The remarks were so disturbing for some listeners that they prompted a wellness check by Florida authorities. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Fox News Digital that deputies performed the wellness check.
Additionally, he also remarked that every morning when he wakes up, he realizes the fact that after his son’s unfortunate demise, only two people are remaining in his house, and the third one is never coming back.
These comments evidently point out the fact that Nash has personally suffered issues with his mental health, and that could be a potential reason why AJ Lee’s actions were particularly concerning for him.
Therapy Chants: Crowd Work or Genuine Concern to Promote a Solution to Mental Health Struggles
The criticism from Nash raises a genuine question in front of WWE fans on whether her promo during the build-up to her all-important match at Wrestlepalooza 2025 came from her heart or was a planned statement intended to garner the sympathies of those attending the show live and watching in their homes.
At Monday Night RAW in Milwaukee, it was the first time AJ Lee was directly addressing the WWE universe inside the ring following her retirement from professional wrestling a decade ago.
The therapy chants came as a result of her stating that while she was away, she was focusing on healing from her mental health issues, in reference to the absolutely horrifying behavior from her mother in particular.
While there is every chance that the crowd started chanting therapy in this particular case on its own because of the atmosphere that was created as a result of the remarks made by Lee. In all likelihood, the possibility that all of this was indeed crowd work can also not be denied.
