David Dastmalchian, known for his roles in the Ant-Man franchise of the MCU, expressed his desire to add another MCU character to his roster: Morbius, the Living Vampire. Jared Leto portrayed the character in Sony’s 2022 Morbius movie, which was widely criticized for its writing, poor special effects, and post-credits scenes.
Dastmalchian, however, feels that he could bring the character alive, as it aligns with his interest in the MCU’s horror and supernatural elements. Speaking to The Direct at a recent comic convention, Dastmalchian said,
I’ve always wanted to take a crack at Morbius, the living vampire. I would love the opportunity to play Dr. Michael Morbius. Oh my God. There’s so many great characters in the MCU, and I’ve always been a fan of the horror and the weirder characters. Anybody from the West Coast Avengers would be fun for me to get to play around with.
Referring to the supernatural side of the Marvel Universe that has yet to be tapped in the MCU fully, he added,
I love the idea of Marvel’s version of Dracula, which I always loved. I thought that any of the monster stuff, the Midnight Suns, the stuff that was part of the old Defenders, would be cool
That sounds cool, right? If Dastmalchian is interested in taking on the darker, horror-driven roles, that would be incredibly exciting for MCU fans.
David Dastmalchian Wants His 2 Ant-Man Characters Back in the MCU
In addition to wanting a shot at Morbius, Dexter Resurrection star is keen on returning to his Ant-Man roles in future Marvel Studios movies. He lightly remarked that his character Veb, from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, would be an ideal fit for the Fantastic Four story. Veb, who can speak multiple languages, could be helpful if the Fantastic Four explore different universes. He said,
I tell you what, I think it makes no sense that the Fantastic Four are going to be traipsing around all the different universes within the galaxies and all these different beings and creatures from other places. They need Veb to help interpret all the language barriers.
He jokingly added that he is “putting out the call right now” to make Veb “the part of the Fantastic Five.”
Moreover, he believes that Kurt, the tech-savvy Russian hacker from the first two Ant-Man movies, could be of great use in the MCU’s Avengers HQ. Dastmalchian jokingly pitched, “Kurt could fix all the computers at Avengers HQ. So that needs to happen.” Looks like Avengers: Doomsday should prepare for that.
Jared Leto’s 2022 Flop Morbius Is a Hit on Prime Video
Despite its critical failure, Morbius has found success on streaming platforms. Three years after its release, Morbius became a Prime Video streaming hit. It has ranked fifth on Prime Video’s Top 10 movies in the first week of October in the USA. (via ScreenRant).
The movie, which grossed just $167.5 million worldwide (via BoxOfficeMojo), was widely mocked for its poor writing, visual effects, and acting. It became a meme sensation, leading Sony to re-release it in theaters, but it flopped again. The movie currently has a 15% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
What do you think? Should Sony move on from the failed Morbius franchise entirely? And, could Dastmalchian’s take on Morbius redeem the character? Let us know your thoughts.
Ant-Man movies are available to stream on Disney+, and Morbius is available to stream on Prime Video (US).
